This is a blue jay: a medium sized bird (about the size of a robin) that is blue. Males and females look alike. It's related to crows, but much more colorful, with its blue, black and white feathers. It's also very smart, like other Corvidae. This one is too big to fit on the feeders, so it is perched in the nearby branches, looking for bird food that has fallen to the ground.

This is a female red bellied woodpecker, a medium sized woodpecker. She is showing her belly in this picture, where you can see an ill-defined patch of reddish feathers that are responsible for her name. To me, the females always look like little bald men (the males have reddish feathers over the top of their heads, but the females have white feathers over the top.

This is a small sparrow that I see only rarely on a feeder--most of the time, they feed from the ground. It has a cinnamon cap, black and white on its face, a gray chest and belly and brown and black wings. It's a chipping sparrow.

This is two photos, one on top of another. In the top photo, a female bluebird opens her beak at a male bluebird who dares eat at HER feeder. In the bottom picture, she has gone completely bonkers, raising her wings and spreading her feathers to the max to try and scare the male off the feeder. It worked.

A tiny gray bird with a white chest and stomach, the dark eyed junco comes to Indiana for the winter. It will be leaving for the north and its breeding grounds in a week or two. Usually its departure coincides with the arrival of migrants from the south.

This small yellow and white bird with the black and white wings is a male American goldfinch. He is molting right now and will assume his neon yellow color with his black cap in another month. Meanwhile, he looks patchy.

The titmice have been going nuts around here lately. They are the loudest birds for their size. They fly from feeder to feeder, singing and waving their wings about. This bird stopped for a moment, presumably to catch its breath.

This is how you know it's too dark to take pictures. I saw a small Coopers hawk (probably a male) on the shepherd's hook and pressed the shutter just as it took off. But it was so dark (it was raining) that all I got was blur. Time to put the camera away and do something else.

I was all excited about the lunar eclipse that was scheduled to start about 2am. However, I was fast asleep by 1230am and didn't wake up until 730am, so here is a picture of the moon I took much earlier in the evening with a little extra. #photography #fullmoon #sandhillcranes #HoosierMast

This is a picture I created from two pictures: one picture was of the full moon, last night and another picture was of sandhill cranes in flight. Sandhill cranes primarily fly during the day, but if the moon is full, they may fly then, too.

A large male pileated woodpecker with his big red crest and red moustache and black and white body and wings in full sun in the crook of a tree. He was looking at the feeders. He must have found the offerings to be inadequate, because he flew off and did not return.
