You know the #hikoi reached deep into every corner of our country...conversations about it with ordinary NZers everywhere - at the supermarket, in taxis, the hairdressers, in cafes, in pubs.

I don't see this "silent majority" for Seymour's Bill and worldview: just his supporters - perpetually aggrieved predominantly older white people who think their privilege and entitlement is somehow being taken away. #NZPol

Tens of thousands of protesters gathered in front of New Zealand’s parliament as a march against proposed changes to Maori rights reached the capital. Al Jazeera’s Adrian Brown was at the scene.

Imagine if the distasteful debate here in Australia around The Voice to Parliament had instead activated Australians of all colours like the #hīkoi did today in Wellington. Imagine if the behaviour of those involved had been as good? No name-calling. No threats. Just people of goodwill coming together in solidarity to show the racists what they were up against.

This country has no clue. In this case NZ puts us to shame.

How many were on the #Wellington Hikoi?

Caleb's a data scientist who used video editing tools to estimate today's Hīkoi Mō Te Tiriti had as over 83,000. He's shared the references and Github analysis on BlueSky. Data geeks may find it interesting. Others have confirmed the size, including a Dunedin hospital protestor in Wellington for the Hīkoi. She said today was easily twice as big as that 35,000 protest.

Bluesky Social · Caleb Moses (@mathematiguy.bsky.social)I used a video editor to analyse the video + estimated the size of the space using google maps Based on that, the lower bound of the number of people in the video is about 83,000 people. Plus the 4,000 already at Parliament house (according to @tzemingdynasty.bsky.social) that makes 87,000 people. [contains quote post or other embedded content]

"More than 42,000 people have gathered as the Hīkoi mō te Tiriti overflows from Parliament's grounds and onto nearby Wellington streets."

That's the numbers the cops have given RNZ. Based on the numbers journalists reported they were given by the cops, about protests I attended, I suspect the full number of Hīkoi participants today is probably many times that.

So David Seymour thinks that the Hīkoi is not representative of New Zealand.

I have some questions for him.

If 45,000 people in the Hīkoi is not representative of New Zealand, how many would be?

Where are the demonstrations from those that are representative of New Zealand, as he puts it?

RNZ · Hīkoi not representative of New Zealand, David Seymour saysBy RNZ News

A post-match #hīkoi observation as someone who could see it all day but not in it: at 5:30, Molesworth St was clear and clean, as are the Parliament lawns. The only traces are a couple of abandoned banners, and overflowing rubbish bins around which everyone has carefully piled what wouldn’t fit. So not just #ToitūTeTiriti but toitū te whenua as well. Ka rawe atu!

Ok, maybe one more photo :-) These pamphlets were handed out to those attending the hīkoi. It included various details, such as social media links, where to get help, for example who to get sunscreen, water, etc. from. Plus various other links, and a map of the hīkoi. But I loved the front page shown here which perfectly laid out how to march and in what spirit. Such positive, energising and unifying words. And it was exactly as it turned out!

i lived in washington, dc and close by for decades, have attended marches and protests for nearly 30 years. and i can't think of a single time where i experienced such a feeling of joy and pride flowing from a protest march. yes, there was anger as well, but the overwhelming sense i got was "we are here, we are together, and we will not be silenced or made invisible." #Hīkoi #wellington #HīkoiMōTeTiriti
