Many people, unfortunately, do not read legal documentation. It has become human nature to simply click "OK, I agree".
If more folks did read their terms of services, you would know word-based domain name extensions are not managed the same way as normal with the protection of ICANN.
As it stands now, if Donald Trump really lost his mind, he could shut down much of the Fediverse.

Remember that glorious period back in 2012, when #ICANN started accepting applications for new generic top-level domains (#gTLDs), eventually adding over 1,200 new TLDs, including such goldmines as .extraspace and .vermögensberatung?
Well, clearly that wasn't enough, because we're now finding ourselves on the cusp of another round.

ICANN launches a mandatory Registry Service Provider (RSP) Evaluation Program to improve the security and stability of the DNS while reducing the time involved in the technical delegation process of the new gTLDs scheduled for release in 2027-2028, with 37 RSPs managing 1,200 gTLDs including Afnic.

So if theoretically any business can get their own gTLD (but you have to apply and meet all the requirements, etc), we could end up with, e.g. www.microsoft, then what's the point of gTLDs anymore?

Even though @photomatt via #Automattic owns the domain extension, I doubt he would weaponize it against rivals, as that would bring down the wrath of #ICANN (who would strip the domain away).
Are you aware of the impending death of .io domains? I suspect there will be some 11th hour grandfathering on usage, but if not, being trendy may end up biting you as geopolitics crash into digital domains:
You probably don't recognize the registrar Aceville, but it always near the "top" of our most risky registrar charts. Aceville is better known as Chinese company DNSPod, famous for their dynamic DNS and favorite for Chinese cybercriminals. Their risk to users is more than 4 standard deviations above the average registrar in our observation.
This week Aceville received a "breach notice" from ICANN. This doesn't mean they were broken into, it means they are being a bad registrar, in particular, they aren't responding to abuse notices. details in the pdf found linked to the article below.
