I love #WFRP .

Story time: We are currently playing the "Enemy Within" campaign, and we have reached "The Power Behind the Throne" section in the middle (_very_ mild spoilers which are not relevant to the main plot).

We are in the city of Middenheim, in the middle of a massive carnival with all sorts of entertainments - including gladiatorial fights. And their highlights were three minotaur fights, each on a separate day.

On arrival, my character (an ex-Cavalryman, ex-Riverwarden, now-Soldier) signed up for the fight on the third day, and had to pay a 10 Gold Crown deposit (in case he had second thoughts).

The scene below was the fight on the _first_ day, featuring a dwarf Slayer against a minotaur who was definitely bigger than the one we once fought in a forest. The dwarf won barely - he sort-of remained conscious longer than the minotaur, but had to be carried out of the arena.

This caused a certain amount of concern for me.

The fight on the second day was with a young nobleman who was clearly in over his head. The noble panicked, tried to flee, and the minotaur smashed him with a single blow. I jumped into the arena to distract the minotaur for long enough so that the medics could get to the noble, but they were too late.

...that wasn't great, either.

Nevertheless, my character isn't a quitter. On the third day, he had himself oiled up, and, based on the recommendations of the other gladiators, had his chest hair shaved off.

He wasn't allowed to wear any armor (also not great), but he _was_ allowed to pick the biggest tower shield he could find (metallic, so it would make better sound effects when the minotaur's club hit it. After all, he intended to make a great _show!_)

My character is not as accurate as the Duellist in the party, but he _is_ very strong (Strength 60) and is very good with a shield (Shieldsman 2).

He also gained the sympathy of the crowd, which have him +10 on all rolls during the fight - very useful.

The fight was glorious. Thanks to my excellent defenses and rolling very well, the minotaur never laid a single scratch on me - though he did break off a big chunk off my shield (I used that to thwart a Critical Hit). I hit him every time, and I used my Shieldsman counterattack option twice.

But it could have easily gone otherwise. With his first attack, the minotaur had five successes on his attack roll, and the GM told me that if I had not blocked it, he would have done 27 damage - more than enough to take me to 0 Wounds.

A very tense, nail-biting scene. But my character won, and now is eagerly looking forward to the groupies. 😁

Having finished my term running Scum & Villainy for my group, I get to play again—this time in Warhammer Fantasy Roleplay (4th ed).

We all rolled characters, and I scored a human priest. A bit boring compared to (say) being a professional graverobber, but still potentially interesting. I've chosen to have him worship Verena (goddess of justice and order), so we'll see how *that* goes.

Naturally I've gone and drawn him.

One of the things that I like about the #WFRP #ttrpg is that it makes absolutely no pretense that the world is "fair". There is no guarantee that the heroism of the PCs is going to be rewarded or even recognized, and something deeply unfair can happen at any time. To pull off a victory, the PCs need to be constantly on their toes - which makes their wins all the more sweeter, because they are hard-earned.

I'm currently playing in the #WFRP "Enemy Within" campaign. We are currently in "Power Behind the Throne", and my ex-Cavalryman, ex-Riverwarden Soldier has decided to participate in the minotaur arena fights.

...and after seeing one fight a dwarf Slayer, he has some second thoughts. That minotaur _was_ a lot bigger than the one they fought in the forest that one time, and while the Slayer won, it was a close thing.

But damnit, he gave his word, he doesn't want to chicken out, and he doesn't want to lose the 10 gold crown deposit, either. I'll just have to hope that my sword-and-shield fighting skills are sufficient to get through this without burning a fate point... #ttrpg

In other news, in our #WFRP campaign we have just entered Middenheim and the "Power behind the Throne" adventure.

Our elven wizard is a bit miffed that she had to pay 17.2 gold pieces for the privilege of entering the city. But my ex-Cavalryman/ ex-Riverwarden/Soldier _did_ manage to smuggle her books about forbidden Chaos lore into the city for her, so it could have been so much worse.

We've found a place to stay, and since my character has to learn a music instrument to complete the first career level, he is going to buy a fife, practice with it, and see if he can connect with some local party people.

Also, we want to root out some local Chaos cult which is undoubtedly up to no good, but isn't this always the case? #ttrpg

Since I changed my Mastodon server I guess I should re-introduce myself:

Name's Danijel. I work as a freelance writer, mostly reviewing movies, TV shows and books.

I've been a big fan of #ttrpgs for over 2 decades. I run stuff like #DnD, #Pathfinder, #WFRP, and various #Cthulhu games. Recently, I started looking into #OSR games, too.

I love vintage and classic #scifi, #horror, #fantasy and #pulp - Victorian ghost stories, sword and sorcery, Universal horror movies and similar oldtimey stuff.
