Questions about #Australia’s #alliance with the #UnitedStates seem to emerge by the day, with a former head of the defence force warning that the “vandals in the White House” mean Washington is no longer a reliable ally.

“Frankly, I think it is time we reconsidered our priorities and think carefully about our defence needs, now that we are having a more independent posture ... Our future is now in a much more precarious state than it was on 19 January” #auspol #USPol

#Carney spoke w/ Ursula #vonderLeyen, president of the European Commission, on Sunday, & military industrial cooperation was discussed….

“Our cooperation w/ #Canada has intensified & should be further enhanced, also to strengthen trans-Atlantic #security,” said the #EU document, released on Wednesday. It added that talks were underway “including on respective initiatives to boost defense industry production.”

Since #Trump’s election, #Canada has been increasingly aligning itself more closely w/partners across the Atlantic, seeking to diversify #trading partners & #defense #allies away from its core relationship w/the #UnitedStates.

In a document prepared by the #EU to lay out the plans for its #defense initiative, Canada was explicitly mentioned, hinting to the talks to absorb the country into the EU #military industry project.

#Trump has been insisting that #Canada should simply become part of the #UnitedStates, citing the dependence on the American #military as one argument.

On Tues, PM #MarkCarney announced that Canada had struck a radar technology deal w/ #Australia.

Canada’s military industry, which is relatively small, has been used to produce Canadian equipment but has also been a regular contractor for building American military equipment or parts.

The #EU is taking major steps to increase #military spending, both loosening budget rules so that countries in the bloc can spend more & proposing a 150B euro loan program to finance shared military development.

That program is meant to prioritize European-made products, with 65% of component costs coming either from within the bloc or from partners that have signed a specific type of deal with it.

In his interview with Laura Ingraham on #FauxNews tonight, #Trump also talked about how he envisions an economic partnership with #Russia might go. “They have some very valuable things for us,” he said, “including very big forms of rare earth.” He described Russia’s land mass as “a big chunk of #RealEstate, the biggest” & said “they have things that we could use, frankly.”

As part of the potential #ForeignPolicy shift, the #US might NOT defend a fellow #NATO member that is attacked if the country doesn’t meet the #defense spending threshold [or Trump’s perception of what they spend, which is extremely skewed & based on #disinformation]. If #Trump makes that change, it would mark a significant shift from a core tenet of the #alliance known as #Article5, which says that an attack on any NATO country is an attack on all of them.

🚨🚨🚨
#Trump is considering a major change to the #US’ participation in the North Atlantic Treaty Organization, acc/to 3 current & fmr senior US officials & one congressional ofcl.

Trump has discussed with aides the possibility of calibrating America’s #NATO engagement in a way that favors members of the #alliance that spend a set percentage of their GDP on #defense, the ofcls said.

NBC News · Trump considering major NATO policy shiftBy Courtney Kube

The only reason #China would ever attack #Australia is our #alliance with the #USA and all the US American #military and #intelligence faculties we're daft enough to host. The only country we are protected from by our alliance with the USA is the USA themselves. If you look at a map for a while and consider the capabilities and ambitions of each country, the USA are the only realistic threat. If we don't give them the strategic locations they want, they might come take them by force. So our #defence policy is pretty much just "surrender in advance" since WWII. But our citizens are still not even protected from the USA (or their allies) at all overseas.

youtu.be/PnK_MKuTmIQ?si=AKeN7u I've only watched the first few minutes so far…

That's what made me think of this, but it's not very closely related. But it's a bit ominous.

I definitely agree with this guy about Australia being very powerful and completely unaware of it.

#NATO’s secretary general, #MarkRutte of the #Netherlands, said several European countries had pledged to increase their #military spending during a just-completed #summit meeting in #London. He did not list names, but said it was a “very positive” signal. He insisted that #Trump was committed to #NATO, adding, “please stop gossiping” about the possibility that the #UnitedStates would pull out of the #alliance.

[is it gossip when Trump has repeatedly said it himself?]
