@grrlscientist #alt4you Article headline under photo of a yellow warbler in green foliage:
“Traffic Noise Provokes 'Road Rage' In Male Galápagos Warblers -
Yellow warblers near busy roads become increasingly aggressive when traffic drowns out their territorial songs, and noise pollution could trigger fights.”

Many people on Mastodon won’t boost posts without alt text, or follow nonusers, because anyone who can’t see/ load images is left out. To improve reach, add alt text!

@silverspookgames #alt4you Portrait of Queen Emma Kalanikaumakaʻamano Kaleleonālani Naʻea Rooke, to left of black and white photograph of Queens Hospital in 1859, captioned:
Established in 1859, Queens Hospital provided healthcare at no charge to the people of Hawaii. After the illegal military occupation by the US, there was a concerted attempt to defund and destroy this system.
Today, Hawaiians have some of the worst health outcomes in the US.

@valkyrie #alt4you Illustration of the Lorax by Dr. Seuss - photoshopped into a combat helmet, a pair of binoculars over each eye (that’s to say two pair, side by side), and holding a machine gun, with the added legend “The trees can’t be harmed if the Lorax is armed.”

Chris Hayes, posting on Bluesky:

It's very weird to me that in all the
(genuinely comical) hermeneutic reading
of Trump's decision to annihilate the
global trade system, no one actually
quotes one of the major reasons he
himself cites for it:

He wants to abolish the income tax and
fund the government almost entirely
through tariffs, thereby delivering the
most regressive bonanza to the rich in the
history of American taxation. He has said
this many many times. He said it *at the
announcement* and yet pieces like this
just ignore it.

I am taking actions to revoke all visas held by South Sudanese passport holders and to restrict any further issuance to prevent entry into the United States, effective immediately, due to the failure of South Sudan's transitional government to accept the return of its repatriated citizens in a timely manner.

"Terrible things are happening outside... poor helpless people are being dragged out of their homes.
Families are torn apart; men, women and children are separated. Children come home from school to find that their parents have disappeared." - Anne Frank (Jan 13, 1943)

Text shows over a photo of bundled-up people, including children, at least one with a Jewish star affixed to his coat, standing in front of what look like railroad boxcars.

Boosting these gems with the #Alt4You:

A long, thin, and jagged edge leaf holds two clusters of little insect gems.

On the left are round intensely iridescent stinkbug eggs that have a white spiky fringe around their perimeter. They look like shiny round eyes that have lashes all the way around the circle.

On the right of the leaf are newly hatched stinkbug nymphs. They are an extremely vibrant red with black heads and horizontal black markings.

The scene is a kaleidoscope of wildly jewel coloured nature on a very macro image. pixelfed.social/p/bealeiderman

Alt text:

Since January 2024, we have seen the bandwidth used for downloading multimedia content grow by 50%. This increase is not coming from human readers, but largely from automated programs that scrape the Wikimedia Commons image catalog of openly licensed images to feed images to Al models. Our infrastructure is built to sustain sudden traffic spikes from humans during high-interest events, but the amount of traffic generated by scraper bots is unprecedented and presents growing risks and costs.

The graph below shows that the base bandwidth demand for multimedia content has been growing steadily since early 2024 — and there's no sign of this slowing down. This increase in baseline usage means that we have less room to accommodate exceptional events when a traffic surge might occur: a significant amount of our time and resources go into responding to non-human traffic.

#Alt4You Black-and-White photograph showing a member of the SA, on the left side, sticking antisemitic notes to a shop window that has already a huge poster at its center that says "Germans! Defend Yourselves! Don't buy from Jews!". To the right, a member of the SS is watching the people passing by. At the left side of the photo, a female carrying two bags is looking at the notes.
