animism is practice. go give an apple tree some cider or a troll some beer
I've written a little guide on ways to harvest plants mindfully, from considerations of sustainability to reciprocity and respect for the plant as a person. I thought it might be especially helpful for anyone who is new to working with plants, or new to an animist approach to interacting with nature. #animism #plantmagick #naturespirituality https://pnwmichelle.com/2025/03/10/how-to-harvest-plants-mindfully/

Chris Knight on
'On women and jaguars: why perspectivism got it so wrong'
Across Amazonia, myths hold that in early times it was the jaguars, parrots, tapirs and other animals who first invented bows and arrows, cooking fire, ceremonial buildings, religious ceremonies and other complex cultural accomplishments. Then humans stole these things from the animals, elevating themselves above all other creatures – but at the cost of losing their former ability to engage in easy conversation with the animal world. This mythic view of our origins is the reverse of the Darwinian narrative which our own culture holds up as science.
In this talk, #ChrisKnight will introduce a recent trend in social anthropology – known as ‘perspectivism’ – and discuss whether such radically different ways of perceiving our origins and place in nature can be made to converge.
Chris will be speaking LIVE in the Daryll Forde, 2nd Floor of UCL Anthropology Dept, 14 Taviton St, London WC1H 0BW. Come in good time by 6:30pm before doors close please. You can also join on ZOOM ID 384 186 2174 passcode Wawilak
The Old Gods have not returned. They never left. They were simply waiting for those whose blood and bones resonates with their voice heard in the forests and groves, rivers and standing stones, in the moon and stars and the rising and setting sun. Waiting for us to hear and return to them.

I finished this last weekend. It’s a great introduction to Norse Paganism. The author stands firm against fascism. In fact, one reason I picked it up is because, when you read reviews, all of the 1’s are because it’s too “woke” and antifa. Not sure what’s wrong with being antifascist…..Anyway, that and the focus on animism was great as well as his quick but informative explanation of the pantheon, Yggdrasil, and the myths. I really felt very comfortable and kind of “at home” with everything he presented, and I’ve already picked up the follow up book. While I’ll most likely never call myself anything but eclectic, I will definitely be incorporating some of this into my practice (more about this in a later post, perhaps). The only thing is the first exercise, which is for the breath, gives me panic attacks. Maybe I’m doing something wrong? I have other approaches, though, for getting into a relaxed and open state that don’t make me feel like I’m going to pass out and will use those for the rest of the exercises instead. All in all, I highly recommend this.
Eating some instant grits + nooch and realizing we don't appreciate microwaves enough. Warm food? That is cooked by a robot? Instantly? This is such a futuristic luxury. It's like something from a science fiction story. It inspires an animistic impulse in me... thanks for making my dinner, little robot buddy...
After some extra weeks mostly without snow (good for cutting/stashing firewood in the bush, not so good for hauling) #SnowMother #SniegaMate has been bringing snow this week (several times, but not a lot, yet; and we'll hit +/- -20C in coming days) #CountryLiving #Pagan #Latvian #baltic #animism #Alberta #winter

'Sea shells, women's blood and an Andean bioclimatology of water'
LIVE in the Daryll Forde Room, 2nd Floor of the UCL Anthropology Dept, 14 Taviton St, London WC1H 0BW

Denise Arnold explores the mutual rearing practices between Andean populations and water, in its different manifestations, as a key life-giving element in their mountainous habitat. Andean animist ontologies recognise how humans and water flow are constituted mutually, through a dynamic relationality, which extends to other aquatic phenomena, including the sea-shell Spondylus princeps. This knowledge is learned and transmitted between the generations in the rites of passage of adolescent girls and boys, when they learn an interdependence with water, establish relations with water beings, and practice equivalences between their own blood flow and water flow.
Examined in this context are Inka rites of passage, a school ritual focused on learning about water flow, a female rite of passage when women learn to use particular designs and colours in their weavings, and a ritual offering of Spondylus to high mountain shrines. These practices are situated in the emerging discipline of bioclimatology.
Denise, an Anglo-Bolivian anthropologist, directs the Instituto de Lengua y Cultura Aymara, in La Paz, Bolivia. She will be LIVE in the Daryll Forde, 2nd Floor, UCL Anthropology Dept, 14 Taviton St, WC1H 0BW. Please arrive by 6:30pm before doors close. Or join on ZOOM ID 384 186 2174 passcode Wawilak
If you're looking for a longish weekend read I've finally got a new blog post.
I guess I'll do an #introduction, now that I'm here!
Howdy y'all, I'm Em.
These days I'm feeling too #queer for shul here in Germany, too religious for the queer "community".
I spend a lot of time thinking about how Whiteness and White supremacism manifest in our society and minds. I'm learning to #decolonize my self and always looking for friends who actively seek the same.
I also spend a lot of time these days thinking about #phenomenology, #animism, #panentheism(/ #monism?), and #nondualism.
I'm a software developer by day, but that world is becoming less and less important to me.
My partner and I have a 70 year old steel sailboat that we're completely overhauling together, and someday we hope to set sail from #Hamburg towards wherever the wind takes us. I'll tag posts about the boat with #SVBellaCiao, you can follow that tag if you want.
Until then, come on over. Let me make you a tea. How ya doin, but I mean it, really. Whatcha thinkin about these days?
I'm late to the game because I don't know what I'm doing, so a brief #introduction:
I take care of my disabled brother full-time and stress about it the rest of the time. When I have the capacity I like to read and think about #Zhuangzi, #Thoreau, #animism, and #indigenousknowledge like the work of Tyson Yunkaporta and VF Cordova. I also drink too much tea (#gongfucha), am a former classical and folk musician, and wish I could sit under more trees
I strongly believe that #art can be a form of #magic. On stage, singing or acting, I understand #performing as a #ritual. #Animism, #paganism and #witchcraft are essential to me, and I have a deep love for designing #sigils.
