Update: Man eats banana! On Friday, crypto investor Justin Sun took two bites from his $6.2 million banana at a press conference in Hong Kong on Friday. “Eating it at a press conference can also become a part of the artwork's history,” he said, likening the conceptual work to NFTs and blockchain-based art. “Most of its objects and ideas exist as intellectual property and on the internet, as opposed to something physical.”
The banana had been purchased for $0.35 from Shah Alam, a 74-year-old Bangladeshi immigrant who works at a stall outside Sotheby's, New York. Sun pledged via X to buy 100,000 bananas from the stall, believing Alam to be the owner, which he is not — he is a shift worker and makes $12 an hour. I picked this up at today’s North Star Auction. It’s my second framed Aultman-Taylor piece. This one was the cover of an old catalog. Some online digging suggests this was not long after 1912 and the catalog contents included their gas tractor lineup.
A Rainier beer poster mentioning Zap, North Dakota, at today’s North Star Auction. I didn’t even get around to putting my hand up because others were enthusiastically bidding. Sold for $100.

A banana duct-taped to a wall has fetched $6.3m at an auction in New York — four times higher than pre-sale estimates, @BBCNews says. Chinese cryptocurrency entrepreneur Justin Sun outbid six rivals to get the "Comedian" installation by Italian visual artist Maurizio Cattelan. Sun says he will eat the banana — which was bought earlier in the day for $0.35 — as part of the artistic experience. The installation comes with helpful instructions on how to replace the fruit when it rots. "Comedian" was first unveiled to the public in 2019, fueling heated debates about what art is. What do you think?
I don’t always bid on sheet music at auctions, but sometimes I do.
