They are coming to enshittify money. Fight for cash. Don’t let them take it away.

Cash represents money that doesn’t cost money to use. It is a public good. All people can use cash There is no public good electronic transaction. (In the UK bank-to-bank transfers are free and easy by law. No reason to have Zelle or Venmo, not so in the US) We must protect cash.

Public libraries bother digital publishers because someone can read the book without paying for it. Cash bothers banks and big tech companies because you can spend it without paying them. Banks, credit card companies, and big tech (think ApplePay. SamsungPay, etc), want to charge you money for you to use your money. They also get transaction data that they can monetise in various ways (selling to you, selling the data, etc).

I experienced this last week. In the US it’s still free to deposit a paper check, but virtually any “wire” or electronic transfer has a fee. I signed a home equity line of credit and I was getting some proceeds. I had 2 options: “electronic check” or wire transfer. Wire transfer costs $20. “Electronic check” was free.

“Electronic check” is when they email me a PDF and I print it. Then, I take photographs of the printout with my bank’s mobile app for depositing checks. Takes more than a day to clear, but totally free.

Don’t let them take cash away. Fight for it. Use it some so people can see it being used.

The Guardian · ‘A fundamental right’: UK high street chains and restaurants challenged over refusal to accept cashBy Jon Ungoed-Thomas

After having a discussion about this on Discord with someone and being confused by their definition of #cash, I'm curious what the #poll results on this would be.

Went to Canadian Tire to pick up a few things today and paid with cash. Poor boy at the till froze when I handed it to him and it took a moment for him to figure out what to do next. I think I was his first cash paying customer. I hadn’t done it in years either and it felt weird and old timey. Afterwards, though, I felt liberated. #analogue #cash #shopping #Canada

The return of cash continues... partly driven, possibly, by the cost of living crisis encouraging 'budgeting by envelope' - the distribution of cash to different envelopes for different uses (food, energy etc.).

Looks like the banks' attempts to promote the cashless society (to their advantage) may have stalled for a while, at least... well until they remove yet more ATMs from the UK, that is

@minorusaba @Nickiquote not to mention a merchant will still be willing to sell you a bottle of water even when the fridge it's in is out of power for the next days and they've to cashier with a metal can and do accounting with pencil and paper.

  • #cash works offline and it's #security is very tangible. Everyone who even slightly handled money knows that it's distinct feel and visible security marks make it hard to counterfeil....

Add to that how cash-centric Japan is and that Yen is one of the most secure currency in terms of counterfeilts, and you have toe opposite scenario of the "P.R." China where counterfeilt bills are so rampant every vendor there uses a bill checker or just straight up does WeChat Pay - only...

  • My biggest gripe with #Euro is that the smallest denomiation bill is €5, and that it would've been appreciated if there was like a €2 and €1 bill as well, cuz if you want to tip people whilst travelleing it necessitates getting a stack of U$D 1 bills as in non-#EU nations there is usually no way for service personnel to get #coins exchanged!

I know cases of waiters in places like Egyt that have accumulated over €1k in coins but they can't get that exchanged and so these are stuck are stuck in a big big jar in their apartments...

@energisch_ @mina @Nickiquote nah, I think restricting #cash is inherently facist, as there are already existing mechanisms re: #AML that make it redundant.

  • As long as #cashless payments ain't as fast, cheap and convenient as cash they'll always be a secondary option.

Not to mention all the #discrimination based off (not having) #access to #PaymentProviders and #PaymentMethods.

There's a reason why #SMSpayment and #Monero are the only ones globally rising as they are fast, convenient and universal, but even they don't replace cash in it's universality.

Replied in thread

@mina @Nickiquote not only that, but anything that even closely resembles #cash in terms of #anonymitiy anf #fungibility like #Monero gets criminalized.

  • Not to mention cash just works and IMHO curbing on it's use is inherently bad, to the point that I thing the #ECB should make an #ES2 version of the #500EuroBanknote as the rising #Greedflation makes it more "necessary" than before...

People who argue one doesn't need cash because #card and #NFC #payment and #SEPA #WireTransfer exist would also argue people don't need #PressFreedom because they can write #LettersToTheEditor...

  • TBH I think that cash should be enshrined as acceptable payment methods, as the only exceptions I know [i.e. #RealEstate and #CarRental] are grounded in #security concerns:

Most car rental places don't want to handle cash and demand #KYC for insurance reasons and most banks and notaries (who also have to do KYC & #AML anyway!) have less money onsite than the average Supermarket has in a single cash drawer and don't like having that much stuff onsite anyway.

who wouldn’t let his kids use his products and owns a billionaire zucker bunker in Hawaii? (Number links btw: byjus.com/us/math/million-bill and cfinancialfreedom.com/what-is- )
Hawai’i, a state he is decidedly not from? Hawaii, a sovereign nation before we (americans) invaded and stole it?

How much is a billion of anything, anyway? mkorostoff.github.io/1-pixel-w
(US scale: 1,000 million or 1,000,000,000 or 10^9, so 1 with 9 zeros before the decimal point.
UK scale: one million million or 1,000,000,000,000 or 10^12, so 1 with 12 zeros before the decimal point.)

But that’s like… *any* billionaire has that much. And keeps it. forbes.com/sites/lisettevoytko

But what does a sample of US citizens

Anyway the list thing is cool. Still can’t find my Like a Dragon, Irate Yakuza in Hawaii post tho. Wait.

But the viewers that have stayed on #X now largely see posts that skew toward the political bent of #ElonMusk himself, an avid booster of #Trump who has *jumped* onstage w/him at rallies, donated $118M toward his bid for a 2nd term & launched a [highly illegal] daily $1M giveaway for registered voters in swing states. #Musk, the world’s richest man, *paid* $44B [not really, he used #Tesla #stock as virtual #cash] to buy X & has since become its biggest user….

" In Germany – Europe’s largest economy – thieves have been blowing up ATMs at a rate of more than one per day in recent years. In a country where cash is still a prevalent payment method, the thefts can prove incredibly lucrative, with criminals pocketing hundreds of thousands of euros in one attack. "

@pandora_parrot the fact that #ChargingInfrastructure is at best as #inconvenient as the unattended LPG refueling station in my hometown if not worse is the reason why no #CarRental I know has #BEVs unless you explicitly look for those because all you need to refuel a #CombistionEngine powered car is a hand to open the fill port, pump gas and pay the moey owed to the cashier...

  • And since #Germany love #cash and hate "registering" or god forbid downloading "yet another app" #charging is seen as even more inconvenient than it inherently will be due to the relatively low energy transfer speed compared to refueling...
