Hi everyone! I finally came around to write an #introduction post.

I'm Sebastian and I work as an #orchestralibrarian in a #symphony #orchestra. My cultural interests are #music (#classicalmusic, #jazz, #choir #singing), #literature, #history and #art. Other interests are #tech, #gaming, #running, #football (meaning #soccer) and #cycling.

I came to Mastodon in the 2022 wave of new users, but it took me this long to get this post done. Don't really understand why.

STANCE, the Seattle Trans and Nonbinary Choral Ensemble, is holding auditions next month!

I'll be rejoining after taking a year off to grow a baby—I can't wait! There's nothing like being in a room full of trans people making collective art 🎆

Google DocsSTANCE Audition Form Winter 2025Thank you for signing up to audition with STANCE (Seattle Trans and Nonbinary Choral Ensemble). We are very excited to meet you. No prior choral singing experience is required. We will have an intro to music course preceding each rehearsal to help singers learn how to read music and translate it into your voice. Auditions will be held at Rainier Beach Presbyterian Church on Wednesday, January 8 from 5:00-9:00. Priority slots will be held for BIPOC singers. Rehearsals will be held at the same church on Wednesday nights from 6:45-9 pm with the Intro to Music course from 6-6:45 starting Jan 22. The church is mobility device accessible and has parking and bus routes nearby. Our Spring concerts will be held in June for Pride month. Exact dates TBD. Anyone over age 18 who self identifies as under the Transgender and/or Nonbinary umbrellas is encouraged to audition. We do not police identities or labels in this group. BIPOC community members will be given priority for the limited slots we have open. We require masks of all singers for rehearsals and performances in order to protect our immunocompromised and high-risk singers. We provide high-quality singers masks to all new singers. We also require updated COVID boosters obtained since Fall 2024. We ask that singers who wish to perform in the concert not miss more than half of the in-person rehearsals (10 rehearsals). The purpose of the audition is to hear your voice and determine what section to place you in and what your current musical background is. We’ll ask you to sing a piece of music that you know already and if you do read music, we’ll have a piece available for you to sight read. If you have an audition piece that you can bring on paper, please bring an extra copy with you for the accompanist. Songs from memory are also fine. No prior experience is necessary to join.

Edit - here near the end, after Stevie Wonder! Not sure why the correspondent put the mic right in people's faces, that was unnecessary and kinda the opposite of choir..!

Continued thread

Snippet o' the day is the end of 'Tomorrow shall be my dancing day'. It's slightly crammed together in the picture since it was used on a Christmas card last year. And the initial clefs (treble and bass) and key signature (G major) are missing from the pic, sorry.

Fun rehearsal.

Start with an Estonian piece, someone remarks that he doesn't have the brain power to learn it by heart. I really understand this. Conductor gets all pissy and tries to shame said singer "what about all those that can do it?"

Fast forward 15 mins, some more remarks by the conductor, said singer packs up and goes. 15 mins and an intervention of two choir members later he comes back.
Nothing is said, no apologies, nothing.

Later, at the end, I ask clarification if we are now finally singing something of the paper book we bought, or if we can use our tablets (that I use for everything else).

I get a bullshit answer that we have to take everything so it doesn't matter. I say that he should take a decision and then he explodes again "that this is not a fun rehearsal and blabla"... and then stomps off in a true tantrum.

For reals. Wtf.

Our side does misinformation too.

All day my TikTok's been full of something billed as a church choir singing Madonna's blowjob song "Like A Prayer" and people laughing that these Jesus freaks think it's a hymn. (Which it is, sorta; a hymn to cock.)

In truth all of TikTok is reacting to video of a pop music concert in Germany. They know what they're singing along to.

Misinformation can be great fun.

So somewhere in may our choir did a questionnaire if people wanted to go to a choir festival in Berlin or a competition in Denmark, or both.

Our director really wanted the second, but the choir members were more in favor of the first.

So, another questionnaire was sent in september... but this time they got even less people for the competition. So even more drama, and now they're going to ask the people who don't want to go why.

Like, eh, this is a hobby?
This kind of behavior is really off-putting.

For me it's getting to a point where I don't want to do either anymore.

New #ChoirsForClimate song!

Riversong – with words (below) by Rob MacFarlane, suitable for any level of choir. Best with lots of performers but will also work for a small group. It works Rob’s amazing text into easy rounds of five, ten and fifteen parts, and some very simple backing parts, which can all be performed together or separately. Designed for community choirs with a wide variety of abilities. Download (#CreativeCommons license) at choirsforclimate.com/riversong
