When a volcano erupts and spews ash all over your watershed you get water full of grit and a concrete grey pool. Note the grey coated plants from the ashy spray. At the time, the ash itself hadn’t fallen at this location but I think it did on Monday.

The Tico Times | Costa Rica News | Travel | Real Estate · Happy Earth Day 2025: Celebrating Costa Rica’s Natural Wonders in PhotosIn celebration of our little 51,100-square-kilometer stretch of earth on Earth Day, here are some of our favorite photos of Costa Rica and its wildlife.

I dunno, the world looks bad, time for some critter pics.

I am by no means a birder, much less a bird photographer. I am sparing you all my earlier photographic series, entitled "Places Where Birds Were Several Seconds Ago."

But it turns out you can just wait for them to belly up to the buffet table and get some nice snaps!

Actual birders(tm) tell me these toucans are a Fiery-Billed Aricari (top) and a Collared Aricari (not-top). Photographed in Braulio Carrillo National Park, #costarica.

UPDATE: an Actual Birder™️ friend of mine looked at this and told me that the Fiery-Billed Aricari identification was wrong. These are two Collared Aricaris.

Everything is terrible, so here is a lovely trail in the Santa Elena Cloud Forest Reserve in Monteverde, Costa Rica.

This trail is at just under 2000m, but once we dropped down a few hundred meters, it was a sunny day.

More #costarica pics as I work my way through them in coming days.
