Looking for CMS advice

Hey Web devs!

Do you have any suggestions, tips, opinions, dos, don’ts about headless CMSes?

I have a growing list of small/mid non-profits and collectives asking for my help to (re)make their website. I totally want to help, but I don’t have much time, especially considering that they generally have little or no funding—I would most definitely point them to @VillageOneCoop, otherwise.

Therefore, I want a super simple and replicable solution where I can copy-paste most of the code, while providing them with a stable, fast, and modern solution. I had a look at the Headless CMS section in the Jamstack website, but I need opinions from people who actually used some of that software already.

Needs

  • I want to code and configure everything using @eleventy
  • Admin interface (#WebApp) for the client to add pages and write posts
  • Static website in the front-end
  • Simple and reliable CI/CD
  • No/minimal maintenance after the first setup
  • Self-hostable (I was taking this for granted so much that I forgot to write it)
  • If it requires forge integration, it should support #ForgeJo
  • #OpenSource

Nice to have

  • Possibly using #Deno, not #NodeJS
  • Allowing the client to customize a bit their website through the admin interface, with a GUI
  • CMS app packaged on @yunohost
  • No CMS vendor lock-in
  • I’d love to write as little JavaScript as possible
  • #FreeSoftware

Absolutely not

Please, boost this and ask around! Links to videos, tutorials, and resources are welcome.

People whose perspective I would really value: @zachleat @harryfk @deno_land @jaredwhite @vanillaweb @stefan @mxbck @WeirdWriter @deadsuperhero (Sorry if I am spamming you!)

Still on the look out for work, contract or full time. Must be remote unless you have offices in Spain.

Over 20 years of experience doing: #UX/UI, design (web, product, service), front-end (#CSS, #HTML, #JS), #PHP (#kirby, #craftcms) and more recently #React, #NextJS.

My last project was NextJS with React - I did most of the things listed above. A design engineer or front-end designer role would be right up my street.

Would be nice if you do work that gives good belly feels.

While a small but disappointing number of people chose to assume I have no idea what I'm doing and that I must be unaware that WP exists (maybe, you know, have a word with yourselves?), I have been busy!

Already re-discarded #Drupal (I do wish they would let it be as cool as it could be) along with various other more modern options.

Briefly considered trying #Joomla again just for the memes.

And am now having quite a lot of fun learning the ins and outs of #CraftCMS who I think are also here on Fedi (yep, hi, @craftcms)

I sure know how to spend a Saturday afternoon... 🤓

Playing around with a requested feature for the next version of Guide. With this you can assign a guide to a field and it’ll work like an extended field instructions—displaying your content in a slideout. I’m still playing around with it, but this is what I have so far.

The latest releases of #craftcms require Twig 3.1.5, which supports "arrow functions everywhere". Therefore, Craft Closure is no longer needed and will not load itself if you're using Twig >= 3.1.5. Your existing arrow functions will "just work" -> github.com/nystudio107/craft-c

GitHubcraft-closure/src/Closure.php at develop · nystudio107/craft-closureAllows you to use arrow function closures in Twig. Contribute to nystudio107/craft-closure development by creating an account on GitHub.

Coming in the next version of Guide, you’ll be able to set a default guide in your UI Element settings. This makes it so wherever an Entry Type is displayed it’ll show that guide—which is handy for repeatable fields like Matrix blocks.

But $279 for #CraftCMS isn't feasible for such a hobby project + I'd love to have full page caching with Blitz ($99) for sustainability. craftcms.com/pricing

#KirbyCMS starts at €99, which is a slightly better fit getkirby.com/buy

(They both offer non-profit discounts. 👍 )

But in the end I could do it with less cost with WP - or use SvelteKit, but then I need to integrate a WYSIWYG somehow + file upload. Because editing markdown files is exhausting in multi-lang projects 🤷 2/

The dilemma I face with my passion for #craftcms (and a possible reason why there is still no #WordPress alternative which gained similiar traction among devs / bloggers / etc.?)

Today I thought about building a small info page for #GreenCoding, bit like sustainablewebdesign.org/ - but with broader scope (mandrasch.dev/green-coding) and with multi-language. Craft CMS has this perfectly covered out of the box. 1/

@brandon the challenge it's not ACF itself, the challenge for the switch to #craftcms is most likely ...

- learn to use Composer, especially deploy with it (many devs still use SFTP upload to just upload the updated child theme directory)
- replacing the plug & play approach - install a theme, add plugins which already ship the frontend code and display stuff
- offer alternative to the page builder approach like Elementor, Divi, etc.
- WP has pages and blog posts structure by default

About 10 years ago I was looking for a new CMS option for my clients and was introduced to @craftcms. Since then I haven’t felt the need to switch back to Drupal, Wordpress, or other platforms.

For bloggers and business owners thinking of jumping from Wordpress to Craft CMS, here are my personal recommendations on how you can make that jump and use the flexibility of Craft CMS, and its community, to make the experience feel familiar:
