Does anyone here have experience with GoToSocial's whitelist function and the maximum number of users per instance? Is it a possible alternative to Mastodon, especially in terms of moderation?

Soon I'll (most probably) have to travel to US for work, and I am somehow concerned for my privacy and also for my physical safety: news reports concerning many tourists and expat workers make me feel unwelcome.
I'll of course let the immigration check roam into my work phone and my work PC, which are provided by my company, but I have no intention of bringing my private ones along, as I can access my socials from any browser if I'll ever need to.
This is to avoid explanations or justifications, or useless arguments. I'm convinced to comply, since the alternative is fear and uncertainty.
As for my website, I'll keep it up and running. There are no critical statements towards the current administration. Maybe I can't say the same for my podcast, for which I brought offline a single, maybe to emotional, episode.
As for my #gotosocial instance, should I turn it off for the time of my trip? It should not be indexed anywhere as long as I am aware, but it could, however be browsed at the moment. Would it raise more suspicion if it's off or not? What do you think?
Creating A GoToSocial Instance on FediHost
Hello nerds, another #GoToSocial bugfix release :) Turns out 0.18.2 wasn't the last one after all.
https://github.com/superseriousbusiness/gotosocial/releases/tag/v0.18.3
This one fixes a bug with domain subscriptions with orphan adoption, which could cause entries for the subscription to not be created. An important bugfix for island networks that rely on allowlist subscription(s) to keep everyone in the network on the same allowlist(s).
Also small wording changes on the frontend, and a fix for an issue that could cause error messages to be swallowed on startup.
If you're updating to this version from v0.18.0, v0.18.1, or v0.18.2, it's a very easy update with no db migrations or config file changes :)
If you're updating to this version from a version before v0.18.0, please follow the update instructions from v0.18.0, but replace 0.18.0
with 0.18.3
throughout. Be aware that the update to 0.18.x contains some very long migrations. Please do read the notes carefully.
alright i think i'm done dicking about with the gallery view thingy for now, it's looking pretty good
if you wanna preview it live i'm running it on my personal profile: https://goblin.technology/@tobi
try it on different screen sizes and stuff, it looks good :)
and here's a video preview too
proud of this!
my adventures in #selfhosting - day 89
Oh #PeerTube, you are making me do mental somersaults as I strategize about the best way to self-host my videos.
This newbie wants to ask: how many VPS’s are too many for someone who has little coding experience and has been self-hosting for just 3 months?
Fedi friends, I’m thinking of signing up for a THIRD VPS
Why?
My current setup:
5€/month Debian VPS with #YunoHost, where I’m self-hosting #GoToSocial (this account), #Friendica, #Pixelfed, #Fail2Ban and #LinkStack.
5€/month Ubuntu VPS where I am self-hosting my (upcoming) #Ghost blog (this will make me save a ton, compared to my current Ghost Pro plan).
Back to PeerTube: I could easily upgrade my #Debian VPS and install it there - the costs would be minimal and I would double my RAM and storage. But I am afraid of PeerTube’s consumption when it comes to bandwidth. As in: if I upload a video that for some reason becomes really popular, or if a bad actor decides to DDOS my channel, would that take down all my other self-hosted Fediverse instances? Since they are on the same VPS?
I could limit potential issues by having a dedicated VPS just for PeerTube.
What would you do?
And do you have recommendations for Europe-based VPS’s with affordable plans? (aside from Hostinger) I was thinking of #Hetzner…
#MySoCalledSudoLife #AskFedi
I made a little demo video where I'm going blah blah blah over the top of the #GoToSocial token + application features I've been working on obsessively the last couple of days. Here you go, enjoy my silly voice and the way I pronounce "T"s in letters. Beep boop.
Hi everyone! We just made a bugfix release v0.18.2 of #GoToSocial:
https://github.com/superseriousbusiness/gotosocial/releases/tag/v0.18.2
If you're updating to this version from v0.18.0 or v0.18.1, it's a very easy update with no db migrations or config file changes :)
If you're updating to this version from a version before v0.18.0, please follow the update instructions from v0.18.0, but replace 0.18.0
with 0.18.2
throughout. Be aware that the update to 0.18.x contains some very long migrations. Please do read the notes carefully.
This is hopefully the final bugfix release of 0.18.x, so you can stay on this one for a while while we work on v0.19.0 :)
Thanks for reading, happy slothing, acab, death to fascism, and if you have money to spare this month go donate it to these folks who need help
With this release, Ivory now UNOFFICIALLY supports additional fediverse platforms such as GoToSocial, IceShrimp.NET. I've tried these platforms with mostly success.
The better the Mastodon API support on your platform, the better your experience will be. Obviously, platform specific features like emoji reacts or reply controls aren't going to be available. Still nice!
Edit: SNAC and Hollo crash for me. Thought they worked, sorry.
Good morning Fedi friends!
I started the week in the best possible way: lunch with two @yunohost team members. I was trying hard not to fangirl too much
I thanked them profusely for their incredible work, empowering us all with the tools to self-host. It's thanks to #YunoHost that I have my own #Pixelfed, #GoToSocial and #Friendica accounts. I hope I'll be able to give back one day.
What else? This week I'll publish part 1 of a mini-series about #PeerTube.
Wishing you all a lovely day!
Last night I pushed some super basic custom CSS to my photo-focused GoToSocial profile @kamera@haugenh.us. While it's no Pixelfed, I like the simplicity of GtS.
To any considering running a personal fediverse instance, I highly recommend checking out GoToSocial. Don't be fooled by it's simplicity, it also gives control in a way no other fediverse platform I've tried has done, including interaction controls, control over post visibility – on ActivityPub as well as the web and RSS feeds – post importing and backdating, and of course custom CSS at both instance and profile levels.
Getting things up an running was easy for me due in large part to the fantastically motivated GtS community. Especially helpful for me were:
we now have some GoToSocial docs about importing your archived posts in general: https://docs.gotosocial.org/en/latest/user_guide/importing_posts/
most of the specifics are in the slurp
docs, but if you write your own importer and think it might be of general interest to GTS users, please let us know.
Quick test: can you see the profile image of the account I'm writing this message with?
Can you tell me which network you use (Mastodon, Pixelfed, GoToSocial, Pleroma, Miskey, etc.) and your client (Android app, Web app)?
Thanks in advance!
(My PP is set up correctly but is not displayed, I explain this on my main account, here:https://mastodon.art/@lokigwyn/114071281228472415 )

#Fediverse #Fedihelp #GoToSocial #ActivityPub
Hi people who use #GoToSocial!
I'm in the process of setting up my account on my personal instance and I'm noticing that my profile picture isn't being displayed when you view the account from Mastodon (official client or other external clients) or Pixelfed.
I know it works because I've seen several GtS accounts here with PPs that display fine. Any ideas on how to get it to display?
Anyone running an Open #GoToSocial server?
We're building a list of those open for registration. DM me.
Owning my Fediverse instance seems cool, but it is difficult to populate the timeline... even public timeline is empty at start. If you have not a previous account on an instance with many users, it is difficult to find interesting Tooters.
I could migrate my phpc.social account but I don't know if I will keep this #gotosocial instance.
Good to know, if you run #gotosocial on an Intel™ N280x cpu, embedded wasm does not work. Install gotosocial-nowasm tarball and ffmpeg, ffprobe and sqlite3 packages from your distro.
Otherwise you couldn't find account with emoji in the name or special profile photo.
