@Marcel_Gehlen dann wollen wir, Deinen Hinweis einen groesseren Kreis kundtun. Wie das so geht, kennst Du sicher.

As of Feb 21, Apple users located in the UK can no longer activate Advanced Data Protection (end-to-end encryption) for their iCloud Drive, iCloud Backup, Photos, Notes, and more.

For people in the UK, this is of course bad news and a very disappointing development. If this regional ADP block is maintained, it is a huge drawback for any Apple user's privacy rights, and a loss of data security as well.

For people outside the UK, this is a loud warning alarm. The UK government isn't the only one that has repeatedly tried to undermine encryption and privacy rights. While this might sound obvious for some authoritarian regimes, it's sadly also true for other governments considered open and democratic.

Encryption backdoors are like leaving the door open for a totalitarian society... I don't see why people are unable to understand this...

"If they're going to cave into Zuck's demand to facilitate spying on Instagram users, do we really think they'll resist Kier Starmer's demands to remove Signal – and any other app that stands up to the Snooper's Charter – from the App Store?

It goes without saying that the "bad guys" the UK government claims it wants to target will be able to communicate in secret no matter what Apple does here. They can just use an Android phone and sideload a secure messaging app, or register an iPhone in Ireland or any other country and bring it to the UK. The only people who will be harmed by the combination of the British government's reckless disregard for security, and Apple's designs that trade the security of its users for the security of its shareholders are millions of law-abiding Britons, whose most sensitive data will be up for grabs by anyone who hacks their accounts."

I see a lot of hot takes on Mastodon over what #apple is doing in the #UK and why. Folks are acting like it’s a breach of trust for Apple to turn off #e2ee/Advanced Data Protection in the UK but they are really making the best of a bad situation.

The UK told Apple “you are legally required to give us backdoor access to the #iCloud storage of ALL your users EVERYWHERE and not tell them.” Apple is not doing that.

If you’re in the UK, cancel your iCloud subscription.

(Or the government will have access to all your data. Just like how things work in China.)

Your best bet is to take offline backups yourself as any cloud service provider that does business in the UK will have to either do the same or leave the market.

PS. This is why we left the UK ten years ago. So we could on our own terms and wouldn’t have to do so later on. ar.al/notes/so-long-and-thanks

BBC News · Apple pulls data protection tool after UK government security row - BBC NewsCustomers' photos and documents stored online will no longer be protected by end to end encryption.

If Apple complies with this, the UK government will gain access to all iCloud data globally. The only way Apple comes out of this with any integrity is to leave the UK market. If they give in to this, every regime in the world will demand the same thing. And that’s before we even get to the fact that there’s no such thing as a “backdoor” for just so-and-so. Either there is a door or there isn’t and if there is, anyone who obtains the key can use it.

Overnight all of my reimported photos showed up with pairs. It looks like the issue is that iCloud retains your raw files, even after you explicitly delete them, for 30 days. If during that time you re-import any photos it detects as a paired photo, it reconstitutes the pairing.

This is either hyper-conscientious or infantilizing behavior.

If I receive a message on Apple Messages on iOS whilst my 2020 Intel-based MBP is sleeping, when I reauthenticate to the desktop, every time I have to go to my iPhone and sync messages in iCloud settings, and then do the macOS Messages Settings sync. No matter how long I wait, those other messages don't show up on macOS.

And then, if I read a message on macOS, my iPhone still shows it as unread in this circumstance.

Of course I've filed a bug with Apple. But is this better with Apple Silicon, or is this how it is designed? I thought that, with the ecosystem, both systems would be pushing and pulling from the same place in iCloud, and would have current conversations without effort.

Thanks!

Apple PSA: If (when?) you get the new Apple iCloud T&Cs prompt, it’ll then somehow and inexplicably and bizarrely disappear your existing iCloud Notes app notes.

You will have to re-download those notes from iCloud.

To reset and redownload your notes on your iPhone or iPad, Settings > [your name] > iCloud > turn off Notes. Restart your iPhone. Re-enable Notes, and then wait for iCloud to re-sync and re-populate the notes.

AFAIK, this does not affect any locally-stored notes.
