Ex-Tropical Cyclone Alfred sparks call to cyclone-proof homes as far south as northern NSW

"The research is really clear that cyclones and severe weather events are coming south along the Queensland and Australian coastline, and that our severe weather events will become more severe... Professor Steve Turton, a climate change expert with Central Queensland University, said homes and buildings outside traditional cyclone zones should now be subject to cyclone ratings, including in south-east Queensland and even northern New South Wales. I would suggest it needs to go down to at least Coffs Harbour." >>

They note at the end this is about the huge tornado outbreak of April 3, 1974, which my sister & I spent in the bathtub at my grandparent's home, who didn't have a basement either.

Love the part where the people are calling EMS to *complain* that the area's sirens just keep blaring & need to be turned off.

'Cause they're annoying people.

Early with today’s fact folks as we have another storm passing over here as I…..aaaahhhh…scrambling…expletives…more scrambling noises…more profound expletives…
I’m okay.
I’m okay…🙄⛈️😊

# 26

Bumblebees are docile creatures and only sting when they feel threatened and even then as a last resort.
Only females (queens/workers) sting. Bumblebees don’t die after stinging as the stinger is smooth and doesn’t catch in human skin.

Weather has been one of my life-long interests and pairs well with photography. Every spring and summer I try to take a few days to chase storms near where I live and occasionally venture a few hours further to get onto the Great Plains of the U.S. The views rarely disappoint and I'm often treated to scenes like this.

I caught this display of mammatus clouds in western Kansas while following a large complex of storms driving home from a conference in Denver. I've adopted a saying over the years to always be somewhere for sunset, particularly when I'm chasing. That brief moment of time before and immediately after sunset (or before sunrise) creates the most spectacular lighting conditions as rays of light move through the various layers of the atmosphere.

Fleeting moments that leave an impression for a lifetime.

Bats surf storm fronts during continental migration
phys.org/news/2025-01-surf-sto

"On certain nights, we saw an explosion of departures that looked like #bat fireworks... #Bats left on nights when air pressure dropped and temperatures spiked before incoming #storms... bats used less energy flying on these nights of warm wind, confirming that they were harvesting invisible energy from the environment to power their continental flights."

Scientists say climate change made Spanish floods worse

While scientists are reluctant to say any single extreme event was caused by #climate change, researchers have been quick to point out the role that rising temperatures have had in making the Spanish #floods worse.

“No doubt about it, these explosive downpours were intensified by #ClimateChange,” said Dr Friederike Otto, from Imperial College London

“With every fraction of a degree of #FossilFuel warming, the atmosphere can hold more moisture, leading to heavier bursts of rainfall.”
