I broke the 1000th intracoelomic implant surgery milestone a couple of weeks ago while putting trackers in northern pintail in New Mexico. That's just this specific type of surgery, not all the other types I've done with birds. It feels like a lot of years and a lot of miles and a lot of birds that passed through my hands. I'm proud to say that my safety record is excellent and I've helped a lot of projects and science get accomplished.

One disadvantage of living in a very small city (almost rural) is needing hospital care. I am looking at 1-2 spinal surgeries with stay overs at the hospital over the next 3-6 months, and it has to happen in Denver, almost 3 hours each way from our home in southern Colorado. We have no one really to drive to/from whilst sedated, and I understand I won't be able to drive for a few weeks, so that'll be interesting. Basically we'll have to do the equivalent of Uber-ing.

When we moved to our city, we noticed there was a hospital here, so we thought we were set up for success. Unfortunately it is not a good hospital so we must travel to Colorado Springs or Denver for medical care.
