Their presence will shower nearly a trillion dollars’ worth of legitimacy upon #Trump — a demonstration that he has triumphed over decency & the rule of #law & is now fully accepted & feared by the well-heeled & the powerful, by #corporate America, by the #establishment. We are witnessing a melding of #oligarchy & #Trumpism. (In the days before the ceremony, there was a host of parties throughout DC, mounted by #tech #aristocrats to celebrate Trump’s inauguration.)

The symbolism is thunderously loud. Instead of QAnon shaman Jacob Chansley—the spear-carrying, face-painted, bare-chested Trumpster who wore a horned fur hat when he led #Jan6 rioters into the Capitol & who was sentenced to 41 months in prison for his participation in the assault — #ElonMusk, #JeffBezos, & #MarkZuckerberg will this time be the iconic figures at the Capitol.

There can be no mistaking that #Trump harbors tyrannical impulses & that he desires to consolidate power so he can visit revenge upon his foes & detractors (real & imagined) & provide safe space for his robber-baron allies & grifting cronies. Despite this—or due to this—he is being legitimized by the richest & the most influential Americans.

#RBG’s family bitterly opposed the ads. #RuthBaderGinsburg’s granddaughter, Clara Spera, said in a statement in Oct that the family condemned the use of her grandmother’s name & that doing so to “support Donald Trump’s re-election campaign, & specifically to suggest that she would approve of his position on abortion, is nothing short of appalling.”

During the #election, the #ElonMusk funded PAC had run ads arguing that Trump’s position on abortion was not dissimilar from that of Justice Ginsburg, a #feminist icon. “Great Minds Think Alike,” read the text on the super PAC’s website, featuring twin large photos of #Trump & Justice #RuthBaderGinsburg, who died in 2020.

The sum is a fraction of #ElonMusk’s wealth. But it is nonetheless a staggering amount from a single donor, who poured the cash into allied groups & is now playing a role in helping shape the next admin.

One of #Musk’s most brazen moves — which emerged only on Thurs — was spending $20M to prop up a super PAC that was named after #RuthBaderGinsburg, the late liberal #SCOTUS justice, but that sought to help #Trump….

It started w/what #ElonMusk described as California’s “fascist” Covid lockdowns, which forced him to temporarily close his #Tesla plants [profits over people], & continued w/his outrage over #Biden’s decision to exclude him from an #EV meeting at the WH [vanity]. In 2021, he moved from CA to TX, surrounding himself w/a more #conservative social circle.

…#ElonMusk was one of the last to take a fully reactionary turn. Since his #PayPal days, he has moved into realms that transcend “#technology” in the #SiliconValley sense, becoming a modern industrialist in the spirit of Henry Ford. But his ties to the #tech industry & its pro-#Trump #moguls remain strong. He had been on his own *journey* over the last few years, pushed to the right by a confluence of forces.
