Suffice it to say, there are dangers to being around large trees, but I personally would not want to live in a city or suburb that doesn't have large trees.

What needs to happen is what used to happen - we used to have robust public horticulture that cared for the trees and maintained them. It wasn't just outsourced to chainsaw jockeys. If knowledgeable people in sufficient numbers and with sufficient resources care for public trees = lower risk.

There is a complex web of issues here and while I've seen the occasional article talking about things right after a windstorm, I haven't yet seen a newspaper or journal article that really takes on the complex web of issues in street/public tree policy in the US.

Maybe the arborists are more aware of what's out there.

When I started studying carob, I studied street trees in my region that had been planted as far back as the 1920s. I walked a lot of streets & saw a lot of street trees, not just carob.

And I started to learn about how political choices over decades had affected how street trees are chosen and maintained and who does that maintaining.

If you don't have dental coverage yet need a cleaning, dental schools have some free appointments. Such appointments usually take longer because people are just learning, but they're supervised by clinic instructors.

If you're near Sacramento and need a dental cleaning, here's info about Carrington College's program:

Please boost: One thing I miss here in the Fediverse is scuttlebutt from UC Davis and UCs in general. I used to be able to get some of that from the birdsite.

If you're at UC Davis, esp if you're an undergrad (I'm not, but I like to stay in touch with what's going on in the undergrad experience), let me know. Let's find each other.

I don't want Reddit, Discord, and Facebook to be the only choices. @academicchatter

I've posted photos before of these great ceramic public artworks at the UC Davis Arboretum, but today had better lighting so I took new photos.

This is a semi-circular wall of plants and insects.

Despite UC Davis being a public university, blind folks aren't really welcome - there's next-to-no Braille anywhere at the Arboretum. This is one of the few tactile works, but it's incised in Roman letters.

They have a "sorry, not sorry" built in with stickers telling members of the public to call or email them with the barcode/serial number for them to "take care of it".

Bird doesn't even have its own fleet. Contractors using Budget rent-a-car trucks dump these things off all over town, maintain the batteries.

But when it comes to getting them out of the way of disabled people, that work is foisted onto the public.

UC Davis undergrads: If you're facing financial hardship, you might be able to get help from ASUCD.

"The Aggie Aid Rental Support Grant provides up to two months rent support for eligible undergraduate students. Application closes on 11/27/2024

The Aggie Aid Grant provides up to $500 for basic student needs (not rent) for eligible undergraduate students. Application closes on 11/27/2024

The ASUCD Transportation Grant provides up to $250 to help cover transportation-related costs for eligible undergraduate students. Application opens on 11/25/2024."

Just got a mailer about a large parcel tax on the ballot. Given that my slumlord *quite transparently* passes the parcel tax on to me (who owns no real estate and is significantly poorer), I can't say I'm excited about it. They're clearly doing nothing to ensure renters aren't being soaked by Davis' slumlords. #DavisCA
