I recharged my mosquito traps yesterday: fresh water, some leaves, then a sticky card in the upper part to make sure the pregnant females don't escape. Wish stores would sell these so that more people used them. #mosquitoes #mosquito #insect #diptera

It's #FlyDay! Here's a Crane Fly (specifically Nephrotoma altissima) that I met on the sidewalk in front of my house. We had an neighbourly conversation about the weather, the local sports team, and where to find the best leaf detritus for egg laying.

A couple of nice flies from a wet flush in one of the fields at #Bath
City Farm back in June - Marsh Snipefly (Rhagio tringarius) and Four-barred Major Soldierfly (Oxycera rara). Both associated with wet meadows.

Anybody know what kind of fly this is, who landed on my laptop and proceeded to die in front of me? A hoverfly, maybe? I’m in the redwoods of Northern California.

Black kelp fly (Coelopa frigida). There were uncountable numbers of these so I find it surprising that there are fewer than 300 observations (in North America) on iNaturalist. People just don't care about flies like they should.
