More notes on Organizing, Mutual Aid, and Activism on decentralized social networks

privacy.thenexus.today/more-no

This was originally going to be a #FediForum session ... oh well. But why let the FediForum organizers' screwups sabotage a worthwhile conversation? We decided to go ahead with the discussion anyhow. Here's the notes.

Feedback welcome! There are some specific questions in the reply, or here's a CryptPad form if you'd rather give feedback anonymously, but I'm also interested in reactions to topics we discussed in the meeting -- and thoughts in general!

The Nexus Of Privacy · More notes on Organizing, Mutual Aid, and Activism on decentralized social networks"Mutual aid. Organizing. Sharing, contextualizing, and making meaning of news and health information to counter propaganda and information overload. The use cases for alternative social networks – not controlled by techbro white supremacist CEO's working with their cronies in authoritarian governments – practically write themselves in today's world. Hey @fediforum why did you delete the organizers section of your web page? https://web.archive.org/web/20250313010048/https://fediforum.org/about/

Trying to hide the fact that one of your co-organizers is a TERF? You gonna kick her out, make a statement about it, and apologize, or are you just gonna shuffle it under the carpet and hope everyone forgets? :rancid_vibes:

I was excited to go to the @fediforum on Tuesday.

But today I learned that one of the organizers, Kaliya "Identity Woman" Young, is a big ol' transphobe.

Evidence that she's an organizer:

Evidence that she's a transphobe is in the next toot in this thread.

For a community like the Fediverse to succeed, it needs to be welcoming. It cannot have as a leader someone who poses a danger to a vulnerable constituency.

Edit: She's out: j12t.social/@j12t/114251819679

You like the #Fediverse and would like to contribute, but don't quite know where and how to get involved?

Consider coming to #FediForum, where people from lots of interesting projects come together every six months to talk about current challenges and the way forward. A great way to meet people, projects and get involved!

You don't need to be a developer, many challenges have nothing to do with code!

The next FediForum is coming up April 1-2, online. Check it out! fediforum.org

FediForumFediForumFediForum: moving the Open Social Web forward

Events that bring together the people helping grow this space, such as #FediForum and the Social Web track at #FOSDEM, are amazing.

But we want to know if you think there should be more events dedicated to improving the Fediverse and wider network of New Social platforms? Perhaps focusing on different aspects of this social space.

If you have an idea of a event, let us know in the comments. Maybe someone will pick it up...

If anyone from Meta dares to show up at the next @fediforum I hope people treat them exactly the same way Meta is now treating queer people, immigrants, women etc.

If Meta do horrific things, call their employees out on it in public. Make them squirm. Don't let them laugh it off or claim "it's someone else's department". They are building the tools that are putting people in danger and this has just got a lot worse.

They will not change their behaviour if they are treated politely despite doing horrific things to others.

Dutch public broadcasters umbrella organisation NPO ends their Mastodon experiment writes @Dylan: social.npo.nl/@Dylan/113555207

The press announcement sadly lacks numbers:

npo.nl/innovatie/projecten/dec

So I've gathered some public-available info from social.npo.nl, the server used for this experiment:

cryptpad.fr/sheet/#/2/sheet/vi

This might be useful for those interested in this experiment.

@swf has a 501c3 as their fiscal sponsor, they've reportedly gotten a large grant from Ford Foundation, and there's a "donate" link up on their site, so they're not just a business association. And their mission is "a growing, healthy, financially viable and multi-polar Fediverse”, so it's not unreasonable to ask people in the fediverse whether they see engaging with Meta as compatible with "healthy"!

Questions of engagement with Meta also come up at the SocialWG. Most -- but certainly not all -- of the people there who have expressed an opinion see Meta's involvement as a good thing, and W3C policies wouldn't allow banning Meta employees (or employees from any other company) in any case, so there's no point in doing a similar poll there.

It's a good point about @fediforum ... @j12t it would be very interesting to do a similar poll before tne next #FediForum to see how the community feels about Meta's participation, both in general and as doing one of the featured demos.

@erlend

i think the most annoying thing about this whole discourse is that people refuse to judge threads by the standard of any other fedi instance

like if a mastodon instance got set up and federated right now and it allowed the shit threads allowed it'd be widely defederated IMMEDIATELY

there are accounts literally CALLING FOR THE DEATHS OF QUEER PEOPLE on there right fucking now

the only reason people are even willing to give them a chance is because it's a big corpo, but that should only be reason to give them less of one lmao. especially considering meta's history in particular

don't let them lower the bar for moderation standards here
