We’re excited to announce that, from Monday, we’re going to be the new admins of IndieWeb.social!

We’ve always loved how @tchambers has run IndieWeb.social. His direction has made it one of the best instances on the Fediverse!

Thanks to Tim for his trust in us to provide a safe and secure home for the server into the future.

🌩️ Social media is more turbulent than ever, reflecting society.

Now is our chance to help people move to democratic, open, social technology like the open social web.

We know that open social alternatives give control back to the user, now it is our job to bring more users to this social space.

If you want to help, share word of the open social web with the people around you.

⚠️ Video: flash warning.

The network effect is a term used to describe a service that gains value to others as more people use it.

It's often cited as a cause for slow uptake on Big Tech alternatives as less users make platforms less appealing.

How do you think the open social web should focus on overcoming the network effect?

If you have other suggestions, let us know below 👇

Our Foundation was founded to protect knowledge sharing across social media.

We aim to defend and grow peer to peer learning, first-hand accounts, and credible voices across open social networks.

That's why we care so much about the open social web. It's an open social network which puts community first, letting you learn from the people around you in the digital space.

We're proud to be here.

Yesterday, @anewsocial gave us a first look behind the scenes, as well as introducing an amazing board of directors who will help steer them.

The guys behind it, @quillmatiq and @snarfed.org are both great people. We're excited to see what they do and work with them to grow the open social web!

You can see the first A New Social update here: blog.anew.social/breaking-grou

We highly recommend you check it out ✨

A New Social · Breaking GroundHello, everyone! It's been a while since our last update, so we wanted to catch you up on some of the early work we've been doing behind the scenes to set up the organization and what's coming up soon. Building the Organization Turns out, setting up a nonprofit entity is.

Shouldn't the small team of developers at @Mastodon focus on developing the web app instead of having to have mobile apps as well? They created the most successful microblogging tool in a real federated universe and have a lot to do in terms of UI and technical challenges.

If they were an organization with a lot of money, I could understand, but that's not the case. I've more than once seen people confused with their official mobile app when we have great alternatives like @Tusky and @pachli.

Social media that doesn't cater to the whims of billionaires, hateful politics, or promote fake news. Can you imagine it? 💭

On the open social web, you have a home on social media that you control. You can celebrate diversity, post links, and you can even share beyond your platform.

It's better social media and we're proud to be helping others join.

@EUCommission
If the EU wishes to do something 10 times more powerful and impactful, it should wholeheartedly embrace and promote the #SocialWeb and extricate itself from State Controlled #USA #SocialMedia such as #Facebook and #Twitter.
The #EU should provide free assistance to anyone who wants to set up a #Mastodon or #PeerTube or #Pixelfed server.
It should make their own #Fediverse servers their primary source of communication. It should spend money on promoting #ActivityPub and its benefits.
This is how the EU fights #Trump #Fascism and puts Social Media and its moderation into the hands of EU citizens.

This week, we have our hands full with a second round of Channel.org testing 👀

Our community team aren't technologists, but that's why their opinion is so important.

To pull down barriers to the open social web, we need to build technology which appeals to everyday users. That's why our community team are given the chance to get their hands on what we're building first.

Social media isn't the same for everyone.

So we're wondering, what do you most use social media for?

If you use social media for something we've missed, let us know in the comments.

Understanding why you use decentralised social media helps us build better for you and all the future adoptees of the open social web!

Please boost this poll so more people can have a say.

@thomasjwebb @BeAware @Tacitus Many use the example of XMPP that it was killed off by Google in this manner, but some disagree: daringfireball.net/linked/2023

What makes it more difficult for Mastodon to be extinguished is the anti corporate and anti commercial attitude in general, and the fact even largest instance mastodon.social has enforced these principles.

It's rare to see truly open source and non profit software in this scale, emphasis on the word scale. XMPP and many others never really got the foothold without for-profit companies. Mastodon in the other hand has succeeded already in that regard, on its own. So this makes Threads' "help" not really needed.

Daring FireballSorry, but XMPP Was Doomed, Not Extinguished by GoogleLink to: https://ploum.net/2023-06-23-how-to-kill-decentralised-networks.html

@Gargron @EUCommission

having all those social media CEOs at the inauguration proves this medium matters. the question is when everybody will start taking it seriously, including lots of people here. it's bigger than hanging out with only the people who agree with you. we have private groups for that. what we're doing here matters for civics and the only way to do that right is decentralized without corporate ads or algos. #SocialWeb
