So today is not going entirely to plan.
The set of additional #solarpanels I connected up refuse to give us juice. I tried to trace the fault and got jack shit info because my cheap ass 19 year old #multimeter is (confirmed by many tests now) not working any more. Its fuse is fine too, as is its #battery. It just displays zeros.
So add to the list of unexpected expenses and delays one new multimeter...
#mutualaid is our lifeline to #selfsufficiency so we can help others. Can you help us out with our expenses for...?
Multimeter: $7-8 at Harbor Freight
Crimp connectors: $?
Tyres: ~$1200 (Vulpibus)
Refilling fuel: ~$100
Refilling my overdraft: ~$500
Refilling my other overdraft: ~$250
This week, we have our hands full with a second round of Channel.org testing
Our community team aren't technologists, but that's why their opinion is so important.
To pull down barriers to the open social web, we need to build technology which appeals to everyday users. That's why our community team are given the chance to get their hands on what we're building first.
Destructive bench #vise testing by a guy who builds them. Pretty interesting watch, although mostly US market stuff.
Best performers by far were the ancient vise (despite having been patched up) and the one he built.
The German forged steel vise held true to its "unbreakable" guarantee and bent instead of breaking.
A great example of thorough design and testing of aircraft parts.

Argument of the day, with me *again* explaining why we're going to have developers write tests for their software.
Him: Testing slows down development.
Me: Parachutes slow down skydiving.
I can't *actually* use that argument, but damn, it's tempting.
A fellow engineer was uncertain how they should spend their limited time - should they test the new thing and work on automation later, possibly after the release? Or should they start writing automation right away, but risk finding important issues close to the release date? My answer is on the blog:
Reading this article, particularly the section on the ideas for the future of SystemD, makes me think more and more about FreeBSD.
I almost switched yesterday. Had it installed. ZFS is a dream and native, not like trying to shoe horn in alien technology under Linux. But getting Wayland working seemed to be more effort than I was willing to put in at the time. Tangentially, session management is not an OOB thing with gdm or sddm? Starting the GUI from the command line? Wiring sessions up myself into the display manager? Wut? It's not 1997. Maybe I approached it incorrectly and need to spend more time with it. The Handbook is excellent, except when it isn't. The section on Wayland is quite 'hand wavey'.
Getting the the 4070 working under Debian Trixie was not as straightforward as I'd expected even. Why is Debian, particularly Testing, not following newer NVIDIA drivers? Manpower thing? In retrospect, are newer drivers in backports? Unlikely if not in testing I guess.
Maybe I should poke around with a physical box with a real GPU and FreeBSD to experiment.
Anyway, still on Linux (and SystemD) for now. To be honest, certain amount of FOMO at play as well.
