This has been a bad #flu season for all ages, with #CDC estimating 43M illnesses, 560K hospitalizations & 24K deaths from flu so far this season. It's been a bad year for pediatric flu deaths. Flu cases remain high across much of the country, including Washington state, as the CDC warns this is the first “high severity season” in seven years. In Washington, flu-related deaths have reached their highest level since the 2017-2018 season, with 296 lab-confirmed deaths reported so far in 2024-2025 and over 6 months still left to go in this year’s season. #Flu seasons are measured from the 40th week of one year to the 39th week of the following year, or roughly from October to the following September.

CDC: 13% of kids who died from flu this year had brain damage

Today in Morbidity and Mortality Weekly Report, researchers from the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) say that 13% of children who have died from seasonal flu this season had influenza-associated encephalopathy or encephalitis (IAE), a severe neurologic complication.

AP: "This year’s harsh flu season – the most intense in 15 years – has federal health officials trying to understand if it sparked an increase in a rare but life-threatening brain complication in children.... The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention estimates 19,000 people have died from the flu so far this winter, including 86 children. Thursday, the CDC reported at least nine of those children experienced brain complications, and it has asked state health departments"...
