Good news/bad news on #HR9495, per @indivisibleteam . The good news is that 35 Dems who voted yes last time switched to no this time. It still passed, but narrowly, and can still be stopped in the Democratic-controlled Senate. If anyone lives in #Honolulu, you should know that your Rep. Ed Case STILL voted yes. #ACLU Sign on Letter Opposing #HR9495: “…vast unilateral discretion in the Secretary of Treasury…creates a high risk of politicized and discriminatory enforcement. The executive branch already has extensive authority to prohibit transactions with individuals and entities it deems connected to terrorism and #nonprofit organizations are already prohibited from providing material support to terrorist organizations.” civilrights.org/resource/aclu-

Putting the word out about #trump & his latest scheme to strip us of our freedoms…
#hr9495 seeks to give the #TreasurySecretary virtually unfettered discretion to designate any #us #nonprofit as a “#terrorist supporting organization”…
& strip it of its tax-exempt status!

Please contact your reps…it can make a difference.
Get off the sidelines…the days left to protect ourselves are dwindling.

click.actionnetwork.orgAdd your name: the right to dissent protects our democracy HR 9495 would allow Donald Trump’s Treasury Secretary the ability to strip any non-profit organization of its tax-exempt status by labeling them as “terrorist-affiliated.” This is the first step in enabling Trump to attack those who he perceives as political enemies, and it’s a dangerous threat to the social movements that have secured our rights. Don’t like Trump’s mass deportation policy? He’ll label you as a terrorist. Opposed to U.S. tax dollars supporting war crimes? He’ll label you as a terrorist. Don’t want Elon Musk’s “Department of Government Efficiency” to cut Social Security, Medicare, or Medicaid? Trump will label you as a terrorist. The first time this bill came up in the House, it failed because it needed a 2/3 majority vote to pass. With another vote expected this week that only needs a simple majority (over 50% of Representatives in support) to pass, we urgently need every Democrat to stand in opposition now. Add your name to demand U.S. Representatives vote against HR 9495, which would allow Donald Trump to target any non-profit organization that opposes his racist, inhumane agenda.

HR 9495 is back for round two, electric boogaloo. Last time it needed 2/3 of the House to pass it. This time it only needs a majority. I once again encourage you to reach out to your representatives to urge them to not vote for this bill that would allow the Secretary of the Treasury to declare any non-profit a terrorist organization and strip them of their non-profit status for any reason whatsoever or no reason at all. This is for US citizens, btw.

SFBA.socialChris Paduan (@TheChrisPaduan@sfba.social)I encourage Americans to call their representatives to urge them to vote against HR 9495, which would let the US Treasury Department revoke nonprofit status of any organization it calls a supporter of terrorism without any evidence whatsoever. https://www.congress.gov/bill/118th-congress/house-bill/9495 You can find them here, if you don't know who they are or their phone numbers: https://www.congress.gov/members/find-your-member #HR9495

HR 9495 contains a section that allows a nonprofit to be labeled a “terrorist” organization, then stripped of its tax-exempt status with little oversight and no clear path to appeal. In the hands of the incoming administration this will be weaponized against any perceived “cultural enemies.” This form takes less than a minute to fill out and will send your objection to your congressional representative.

Amnesty International USA Urges No Vote on #HR9495. ‘…If enacted, this legislation would grant the Secretary of the Treasury broad discretionary powers to terminate the tax-exempt status of #nonprofit organizations based solely on a subjective declaration that they are “terrorist supporting organizations.”… There are no safeguards to prevent H.R. 9495’s broad authority from being misused to harass or intimidate organizations...’ amnestyusa.org/press-releases/

Here is a list of Democrats who voted FOR HR 9495 -- a bill that NEARLY passed and would have granted Trump far more power to destroy nonprofits and crush his political foes.

These Democrats, which include Adam Schiff, Colin Allred, and Ritchie "I'm AIPAC's Bottom" Torres, are not to be trusted. They stand for authoritarianism.
