Good news/bad news on #HR9495, per @indivisibleteam . The good news is that 35 Dems who voted yes last time switched to no this time. It still passed, but narrowly, and can still be stopped in the Democratic-controlled Senate. If anyone lives in #Honolulu, you should know that your Rep. Ed Case STILL voted yes. Specifically, this bill includes the text of H.R. 6408, legislation we strongly oppose as it raises significant constitutional concerns. Because H.R. 6408 vests vast unilateral discretion in the Secretary of Treasury, it creates a high risk of politicized and discriminatory enforcement. The executive branch already has extensive authority to prohibit transactions with individuals and entities it deems connected to terrorism and nonprofit organizations are already prohibited from providing material support to terrorist organizations. In fact, it would be a federal crime for them to do so.[1]

HR 9495 is back for round two, electric boogaloo. Last time it needed 2/3 of the House to pass it. This time it only needs a majority. I once again encourage you to reach out to your representatives to urge them to not vote for this bill that would allow the Secretary of the Treasury to declare any non-profit a terrorist organization and strip them of their non-profit status for any reason whatsoever or no reason at all. This is for US citizens, btw.

HR 9495 contains a section that allows a nonprofit to be labeled a “terrorist” organization, then stripped of its tax-exempt status with little oversight and no clear path to appeal. In the hands of the incoming administration this will be weaponized against any perceived “cultural enemies.” This form takes less than a minute to fill out and will send your objection to your congressional representative.

Here is a list of Democrats who voted FOR HR 9495 -- a bill that NEARLY passed and would have granted Trump far more power to destroy nonprofits and crush his political foes.

These Democrats, which include Adam Schiff, Colin Allred, and Ritchie "I'm AIPAC's Bottom" Torres, are not to be trusted. They stand for authoritarianism.
