The only #chalkart event I try never to miss is the Belmont Shore Chalk Art Contest in Long Beach every October. This was my eleventh time (I think). Today's drawing was based on a depiction of Mary Magdalene in a Dutch missal from c1500. A passerby called her "the Patron Saint of Pumpkin Spice", so that's the title now. It was really fun to do this on busy 2nd Street, right outside a sports bar--Angelenos are pumped for ALL the games after last night's game. The background lettering was my first time experimenting with this effect--I'm pretty pleased with the result. #MaryMagdalene #BelmontShore #MedievalArt #chalk #LongBeach

This is an "oil island". One of four manmade islands built for extracting oil from the #LongBeach harbor. In order to not offend the locals visually, officials chose to gussy up the islands to disguise the industrial activity. Built in the 1960s.
