an empire
or gentrify the foundations -
corpses, mostly
mortared with cheap lies
fermented to intoxicate
gods, race, blood,
the divine right of kings
superior inferior
none of it sparks joy

there was wailing
and tearing of hair
shredded garments
sackcloth and ashes
fasting and weeping
and i sit
unsure i could rend my clothes
or obtain sackcloth
though the petrol station
has charcoal and matches
and disposable barbecues
and fasting is fashionable
or fanatical or farcical
while weeping dehydrates
inside and out
and having no hair to rip out
i turn it all inwards instead

With hands like my father’s, I lament the grip,
the pull of the moon distracting, noticeable
though the pinnacle is peace here in this heart
something people won’t allow.
An ache: the will, mesmerized by everything
and here, a perfect platform, a bully pulpit,
tired, worn, and insecure as the mushroom
but not nearly so adorable. Untenable, as a wrong
you build an existence disingenuous.
But most will swallow anything to fill emptiness.
This embrace waits for no one.
