Make Your Own Website
web.pixelshannon.com/make

This guide is intended to help beginners make their first website with HTML/CSS.

I originally wrote it for my daughter, then 12 years old, so she could make a website for a school project. I think it is now complete-enough for anyone to follow to get started making a personal or hobby site.

Let me know what you think!

hey #indieweb folks, as promised I've started to find a way to donate some time, hardware, and expertise to those looking to carve out some space online. To that end I've got a #VM running #yunohost on some mostly-idle hardware in my basement. If anyone would like to use some self-hosted services or perhaps put their own small website up on the internet, let me know and I'll help you out!

#boost if you know someone who needs this

Continued thread

Outside of established organizations, I'm also going to make myself available to help anyone who needs a safe place to put their voice on the Internet outside of the centralized channels.

I'll work on formalizing this, but I'd like to offer help in setting up #websites and small applications for anyone who needs a place like that and doesn't have the means or know-how themselves.

the 32bit.cafe team ( @yequari, @flamed, jay, & @cooperationiskey) did a group interview for the FROM THE SUPERHIGHWAY newsletter! so so so cool to feel seen with what we're doing and be able to answer thoughtful questions about the #indieweb and hobby web development :)

ugh, I hate it when I don't know what I'm doing...

I know HTML is supposed to be easy but it's a weak point for me. I've never been the creative type. I'm more technical and if there's any creativity in what I do that is technical it's finding ways to either get something to work or to break into something so I can gain access...

Formatting words to read and look pretty on a page is like teaching an octopus how to bake...

I gotta learn though... so here I go...

Tiny websites have always fascinated me, along with internet web portals (which haven't been a thing for many years-- at least in the way we used to know them). I'm talking a simple HTML page with just a graphic or two, and a bunch of links. Something that might resemble the early days of Yahoo, etc.

The idea for this site I made has been buzzing around in my head for a while now. It is NOT responsive, there is NO JavaScript, and there's just a TINY bit of CSS. The whole site (one HTML page) is only about 9kb!

A simple site like this one might look primitive compared to some of the huge, complicated websites we see as standard on the internet today, but this site is guaranteed to work on any browser or device.

I used links for sites/documents that I frequent or use a lot, and mixed in my own personal projects for fun. It's a super simple page-- mostly for my own usage. But I really love the design of it!

I call it 'Mr Beamer's Old Timey Web Portal' 😂

EDIT: I moved it to Neocities! ⬇️
