@kristiedegaris Thank you so much for sharing your story on the unpaid labour of book authors.

I first learned about this through the 2022 book "Chokepoint Capitalism" by @pluralistic which describes in detail how publishers (and other intermediaries) systematically exploit creative workers:

The system is in an advanced stage of #enshittification, and things must change.

Heads up for fellow academics as well as other authors. I'm not a prolific published academic, but at least two of my academic journal papers (on Scottish book history and library history) have been pilfered for AI training purposes. All done without my permission. theatlantic.com/technology/arc #Academia #AI #Copyright #Publishing #Books #Journals #Bookstodon

Yes, Mr. Frankenpeters, you invest so much, your profit just keeps growing faster than your revenue:

"We publish an ever-increasing amount of high-quality open access content and invest in technology and people to ensure we consistently outperform the market"

Must be some major investment that doesn't leave a trace anywhere. 🤣

Finally, our team had a wonderful time at #SXSW on Sunday and Monday, where Flipboard and @surf hosted the first #FediverseHouse. Our CEO @mike and the whole team are 100% #TeamFediverse, and were thrilled to meet and talk to so many other open social web advocates. Here’s a feature by @Markoff for @newyorktimes, where Mike, @Gargron and @reckless1280 discuss the rise of decentralized social media, and how it can help publishers and media companies survive and thrive.
