I've done a lot of automation throughout my career, and I have no idea what I would need a smart home for.
I can happily walk to that light switch at the wall, the heating control has little potential for optimization beyond setting the temperature below "T-shirt level". I can open and close the window shutters and look for the plants on the window sill while I do it.
I don't need to think of "OpSec" and I don't need to change batteries.
What did I miss?

I need to find a plug that I can remotely operate via the internet. It should work via wifi. It would be nice if it were actually secure and not some massive security hole in the network. It would be used to power cycle a Raspberry Pi periodically when the Raspberry Pi crashes and I can't get to it in person for weeks at a time.

Bigger stepper installed and now my “steam punk” Blind controller is working! It’s slow as hell but it saves me climbing over my work bench to let some light into the room! Still need to mount the driver board and ESP32 but it’s mostly done!

Viele IoT-Geräte (bspw. smarte Steckdosen, Thermostate, Kameras) senden Daten an (US-)Hersteller-Server. Kaufe lokal steuerbare Alternativen oder setze auf Open-Source-Lösungen wie Home Assistant.
I have a timer in my Shelly Plug S that turns off my work desk at 7 PM — indicating that I've already worked too long. Also great for saving energy when I forget to turn it off.
