With the return of Donald Trump to the White House, an executive order froze all new foreign aid spending. In a matter of days, USD 450 million in annual PEPFAR funding for Tanzania vanished, cutting off free ARVs for nearly 1.2 million Tanzanians.

The leaders of >½ of #Africa’s nations gathered in Dar es Salaam, #Tanzania to commit to the biggest burst of spending on #electric-power generation in Africa’s history.
The #WorldBank, #AfricanDevelopmentBank & others are pledging at least $35B to expand #electricity across a continent where more than a half-billion people still don’t have it. About half of the money will go toward #solar “minigrids” that serve individual communities.

Taarab from Tanzania and Kenya
https://amf.didiermary.fr/taarab-from-tanzania-and-kenya/
Taarab is a music genre popular in Tanzania and Kenya. Here, the singer is Bi Kidude, the Zanzibari star, the Queen of Taarab (RIP).
Her exact date of birth is unknown, much of her life story is uncorroborated, giving her an almost mythical status.
In interviews, she usually answers she’s 100 years old or more… […]
The lakeside town of Kigoma is a gateway from Tanzania to its neighbours, Zambia, the DRC and Burundi. Ships that sail across Lake Tanganyika form one of East Africa’s most important economic networks. But now, the two major boats, the MV Liemba (the oldest ferry in the world) and the MV Mwongozo are out of action. @thecontinent explains what that means for the people of one of Tanzania’s poorest regions.

Oh boy: "Over the past 15 years, the Tanzanian government has forcibly displaced thousands of Maasai from their ancestral lands to establish new nature and hunting reserves along the eastern border of Serengeti National Park."
"This investigation has found that the Frankfurt Zoological Society (FZS), an international conservation NGO that receives funding from the German government, funded and equipped the Tanzania National Parks (TANAPA) authority as it carried out both violent and nonviolent evictions from high-conservation-value areas on the edge of Serengeti." - https://news.mongabay.com/2024/11/how-german-government-funds-and-tanzanian-conservation-agencies-fuel-the-serengeti-land-grab/

"Tanzania Govt: Stop auctioning Maasai land to carbon traders and trophy hunters"
The Maasai people, already on the frontline of the climate crisis, are being further marginalised by the actions of the Tanzanian government.
They are being forcefully evicted from their homes, and their ancestral lands are being auctioned off to greedy corporations for trophy hunting and carbon credits trading under the guise of conservation.
Carbon credits are a false solution to the climate crisis, serving only to greenwash the continued exploitation of vulnerable communities.
Demand the Tanzanian government protect the rights of the Maasai, stop these evictions and prioritise real solutions to the climate crisis.
To: Samia Suluhu, President of the United Republic of Tanzania
* Immediately halt the forceful evictions of Maasai people from their ancestral lands
* Stop the allocation of Maasai land to Otterlo Business Corporation for trophy hunting
* Reject carbon credit projects, a false climate solution that is driving the displacement of the Maasai community
