Hike the woods long enough and you may find a tree hit by lightning. Usually the first clue is seeing long strips of wood laying on forest floor.

2014, a large tree decimated by a direct lightning strike the night before. 8-12 foot “splinters” scattered all about the forest floor, the top 1/3 of tree is gone and the rest doesn’t look so hot.

2005 lightning strike, some bigger slats of trunk jettisoned higher up the tree then a thin strip going the rest of way to the ground where a fist sized hole was in the dirt

lightning strike from 2022 that hit 4 or more trees, each with a different pattern and amount of splitting. Here we see two trees with big bare strips and an 7 foot slat of bark sitting in front of us on the forest floor about 30 ft from the trees.
