"Wicked" costume designer Paul Tazewell is the first Black man to win an Oscar in this category. He told the press:

“This is the pinnacle of my career. I've been doing costumes for over 35 years. The whole way through there was never a Black male designer that I saw that I could follow, that I could see as inspiration. To realize that that's actually me, it became a 'Wizard of Oz' moment, there's no place like home. To come back to the inspiration being inside of me is really remarkable.”

Saw #Wicked tonight.

#TheWizardOfOz is my fave film. I’ve read all the original books & have also read the #GregoryMaguire books that the musical Wicked is based on.I’ve also seen the stage show twice so I’m v familiar with the material.

So I was very skeptical going in!

But it really blew me away. The performances are excellent. #ArianaGrande is perfect as Glinda & her voice is sublime.

My only criticism is how muted the colours are compared to 1939 Technicolour. Munchkinland was dim.

All the talk of the new Wicked movie is making me want to reread the book. I read it right after it came out, before the musical, and loved it. Then I reread the Wizard of Oz, which has a lot of stuff not in the Judy Garland movie. I have never seen the musical... #Wicked #Bookstodon

Just saw #Wicked and y’all there are a lot of white people walking out that movie not even understanding how Black that movie was. Holy shit.

Like those writers were straight up like “what if we just throw the original away and just make a story about a Black woman in white America.”

Damn!
