In the next few months, from its perch atop a mountain in Chile, the Vera C. Rubin Observatory will begin surveying the #cosmos with the largest camera ever built.

Every three nights, it will produce a map of the entire southern sky filled with #stars, #galaxies, #asteroids and @supernovae — and swarms of bright #satellites ruining some of the view.

Swarms of satellites are harming #astronomy.

Here’s how researchers are fighting back.

Did you know that NNSA, the agency DOGE randomly fired people from without knowing the agency secures our nuclear weapons, also helps prevent asteroids from killing us all?

Well, they do, and now you know.

"NNSA works with partners to detect and mitigate impact threats from potentially hazardous near-Earth objects."

This is just the declassified stuff they do to keep us all from dying.

Scientists have identified two types of "dark comets" in our solar system - objects that accelerate like comets but lack visible tails. A planetary scientist explains how these elusive bodies could reveal clues about the origins of Earth's oceans:

The Conversation2 populations of dark comets in the solar system could tell researchers where the Earth got its oceansComets without tails, called dark comets, are a newly discovered space object. Now, astronomers know they come in 2 classes.

What metals can be found on asteroids, and how much is an asteroid worth? From @ScienceAlert: “Many articles talk about a mission to Psyche, the largest metallic asteroid in the asteroid belt, as visiting a body worth US$10,000,000,000,000,000,000, assumedly because their authors like hitting the '0' key on their keyboards a lot.” Read about what all those astonishing calculations mean for the actual value of the asteroids that we might mine.

A "potentially dangerous" asteroid will fly near Earth

On November 18, asteroid 2023 WK3, 259 meters long, will fly past Earth. According to NASA, it is moving at a speed of 52,128 km/h and passes at a distance of 6.16 million km.

If an asteroid approaches Earth at a distance closer than 7.5 million km and its size exceeds 150 m, NASA considers it a "potentially hazardous object".

@VRubinObs 🔭 Today, #astronomers are aware of only about 40 percent 📊 of potentially hazardous #asteroids ☄️ - close-flying objects that are large enough to cause continent-wide destruction if they were to impact 💥 Earth. "The idea is, if there is an object like that, we want to find it while it’s maybe 40 or 50 years out, because that gives us enough time to figure out how we’re going to deflect it.” smithsonianmag.com/science-nat

Only eight #asteroids ☄️ have ever been detected before impact 💥 with #Earth’s atmosphere. The first of these discoveries took place in 📆 2008, and four were detected in just the last two years esa.int/Space_Safety/Planetary

#Asteroid danger explained : "The main challenge stems from the population of middle-size objects, ranging from tens to hundreds of metres in diameter. There are a lot of these asteroids, and most have not been spotted yet." esa.int/ESA_Multimedia/Images/
