So right now the Python script grabs the text of a note, creates a file with the title as the name (needs work) and then sets the date created & modified time of the file.

So on disk are Markdown files with all my Bear notes. This makes them available as plain text files in the terminal, on Linux, heck...probably in Obsidian as well?

I found a Python script somebody wrote to export Bear's notes from the sqlite db they are stored in and it's not exactly what I need so I ended up writing about 25 lines of my own Python code that does what I need.

It is... rough, but it works! I need to add a few things, like cleaning titles for filename, etc. (The script I found had issues of its own, so...)

I welcome these little challenges to learn more Python though.

I have been self hosting for about a year and I love it. This week my NAS started sharply clicking. It is 83% full, not sure if that's why. I had plans to get more space but obviously that costs money. I want to back it up to Pcloud in a way I can restore it in case the worst happens, but I have no idea how. Anyone experienced have tips, links, advice?

First Saturday of the New Year! :blobcatrainbow: 🎉

This is the perfect timing to backup your Mastodon data!

HOW TO❓

From the web interface:

1. Go to "Preferences" > "Import and export" and in the "Export" section click on "Request your archive" at the bottom :blocky_white_cursor:

2. Wait for the compressed file to be ready, it can take a few minutes. You might receive an email notification if you have set it up that way 🗜️

3. Once ready, in the same section click on "Download your archive"
(I like to save mine in a local folder I name "MastodonArchive_YYYYMMDD") 📁

4. Then, in the upper section of the same page click on each of the "CSV" buttons you see on the right side and save them in the same local folder 💾

5. Magic!✨

Note: You should probably do this more than once a year too 😉

ZFS and PBS are simply awesome - and you can use it on BSD but also on Linux! It ensures your data integrity and provides you additional benefits with features like compression and deduplication. Imagine this disk space usage without it?!

@ai6yr nodds in agreement

I work as a #sysadmin and whilst this may not sound exciting, it's kinda necessary, as one's the #janitor, #cleaner, garbage collector, #maid and #librarian together.

So yeah, #documentation, #backup & #restore ain't exciting but they need to fucking work, so in the worst case one can just follow the checklist of instructions.

My feeling is that the massive legal attacks against the @internetarchive in the #usa are not getting the attention they warrant. One lawsuit has been lost already blog.archive.org/2024/12/04/en. Now is the time for all humans to take action to prevent #sony, #UMG from destroying this treasure. I suggest
1. Signing the open letter savethearchive.com/
2. Donating to the #ia
3. Telling everyone what's happening
4. Starting efforts to #backup the archive in #europe (who?)
5. Divest from major labels.
