The artificial Phoenix Lake in Dortmund Germany is a great example of urban redevelopment of industrial areas. The site was originally home to the Hermannshütte steelworks, established in 1841. In 2001 steel production ceased, the transformation into Phoenix Lake began in 2005, with the lake officially filled in 2010. Today it’s surrounded by parks and public spaces as well as residential and mixed use buildings.
