Hubble image of Arp 299, also known as NGC 3690.

This image was taken in 2000 with Hubble's WFPC2 instrument to study the galaxies' hottest and brightest stars in ultraviolet light. Blue and green are ultraviolet, red is visible light. The observations show large amounts of interstellar dust in these merging galaxies.

A #JWST image of Herbig-Haro 49/50 — a frothy-looking outflow from a nearby #protostar — with a multi-hued spiral #galaxy.

Herbig-Haro objects are outflows produced by jets launched from a nearby, forming #star.

The outflows, which can extend for light-years, plow into a denser region of material.

This creates shock waves, heating the material to higher temperatures.

The material then cools by emitting light at visible and infrared wavelengths.

NASA’s James Webb Space Telescope observed Herbig-Haro 49/50, an outflow from a nearby still-forming star, in high-resolution near- and mid-infrared light. The intricate features of the outflow, represented in reddish-orange color, provide detailed clues about how young stars form and how their jet activity affects the environment around them. Like the wake of a speeding boat, the bow shocks in this image have an arc-like appearance as the fast-moving jet from the young star slams into the surrounding dust and gas. A chance alignment in this direction of the sky provides a beautiful juxtaposition of this nearby Herbig-Haro object with a more distant spiral galaxy in the background. Herbig-Haro 49/50 gives researchers insights into the early phases of the formation of low-mass stars similar to our own Sun. In this Webb image, blue represents light at 2.0-microns (F200W), cyan represents light at 3.3-microns (F335M), green is 4.4-microns (F444W), orange is 4.7-microns (F470N), and red is 7.7-microns (F770W). Okay, geek question for folks out there. My son has since moved on to newer phones, and (once again) I am He Who Disposes Of Old Electronics. Any interesting things can you do with a Galaxy S9? SM-G960U 64GB. AT&T but probably unlockable, but I think it's been dropped a few times (seems to be rebooting itself now and then for no reason... but perhaps it's just been rootkitted by malware). Looks like they have near zero value on eBay. Wipe it and replace it with some other OS? Run Doom on it? #electronics #android #galaxy

A face-on barred spiral galaxy anchored by its central region, which has a bright blue central dot surrounded by a lighter diagonal blue bar structure made of a haze of stars, which forms an angled oval toward the top. The central core and bar fill about a third of the image. Two distinct spiny spiral arms made of stars, gas, and dust also start at the center, appearing brown or greenish within the blue bar, and extending to the edges, rotating clockwise in bright oranges. The brightest areas of the arms are two large arcs that start at the central region. The one at left stretches up to the top in a long arc and another at right extends toward the bottom. Scattered across the packed scene are bright blue pinpoints of light, which are stars spread throughout the galaxy. In areas where there is less orange, it is darker. A triangular area at bottom right is largely the black background of space.

Interactions between these two galaxies triggered a fierce burst of star formation, making Arp 299 one of the most powerful nearby starburst galaxies. At least 10 supernovae have been recorded in the galaxies, although there have likely been more, hidden by the large amount of interstellar dust in the merger.

Two merging galaxies form an abstract shape, which looks a little like a rubber duck. Within the "head" and "body" of the duck are blue-white dots, which are star clusters, and brown swirls, which are dust and gas. The outside of the duck is outlined with hazy yellow swirls, which are older stars.

I like this galaxy very much. However, I don't know if I like it because of its "grand design" or because it reminds me of The Time Tunnel. Yes, that ancient TV show in which Tony and Douglas were inevitably lost in time. (Never understood how the guys in charge could retrieve a massive mammut from the past, but not the pair of time travelers together). Anyway, this is M51, The Time Tunnel.

In my post, I said the photograph was only of M51, the Whirlpool Galaxy. But that's not true. This galaxy obviously is tearing apart another galaxy, its neighbor: NGC 5195, or M51b for short. The name of M51, the bully, seems appropriate; it is indeed a cosmic maelstrom. I must mention that there are a lot of "cosmic maelstroms" in our universe, so M51 taking all the credit does not seem fair to me. I've added information of the red wavelength known as H-alpha. In this particular wavelength, ionized hydrogen emits a lot of light. Emission nebulae are made mainly of ionized hydrogen, so you can see in this picture many of these kinds of nebulae sparkling with a reddish color, the spiral arms of this majestic thing. How far this thing is, you may ask. Who knows, it might be 15 million l-y or 30 million l-y away, according to the available literature. I take bets. You can find more galaxies, if your are patient enough...
