I was on a podcast! I had a fun, three-part chat with Peter from @code4thought about:

+ Leaving academia after 10+ years of postdocs
+ Studying volcanoes in Iceland and Mexico
+ Arguments to promote open source adoption in the organisation (portability; dealing with security concerns)

Me: Hey everyone, how do you do random?

Gatekeeper: You do not.

Me: Well, I am sure there is away, and I really would like to do random.

Gatekeeper: I am sure there is a way too, but that is not the way.

Me: Well, perhaps it is not the way for you, but I really do want to do random.

Gatekeeper: Linux is not Windows, and you should use the terminal and this long, complicated, boring, time-consuming method. It is the way!

Me: OK, well, I am glad you like to do it that way, but I just am asking for anyone to please point me in the right direction to do random, and am not trying to debate anything.

Gatekeeper: No one will help you. It is not the Linux way.

Me: Never mind, I found out how to do it myself. If anyone wants to do random, it is actually easy, and I should have seen it right away. All you need to do is X, Y, Z, and that works. I hope this information is helpful to someone.

Super Gatekeeper: We have removed your content because it is inappropriate to the way.

Linux and open source demolish capitalist myth that profit drives innovation. Some of the world's most vital software being built by volunteers as opposed to corporations proves that humans create interesting things for the sake of curiosity and joy. When profit becomes the primary motive, you get ads, not Apache; microtransactions, not MySQL. Real innovation thrives when we're free to build, not just bill.

@cwicseolfor @hakfoo @futurebird @lnlyisol There was also the politics of it.

For a long time, Silicon Valley positioned itself as being the enlightened, socially-conscious, pro-freedom, pro-consumer alternative disrupting established cartels and vested interests.

Instead of believing what the old media barons tell you about the War in Iraq and Saddam's WMDs, our platforms let anyone be a publisher!

Instead of the RIAA's boy bands and lip syncing pop idols, we allow talented independent artists to be heard!

Instead of IBM, and later Microsoft, having a monopoly, buy our products instead! Think different! Don't be evil! It just works!

And then once everyone was locked into the walled gardens, the enshittification began.

Now.

What we really should have collectively been insisting on was a genuinely enlightened, socially-conscious, pro-freedom, pro-consumer alternative.

Member-owned, community-run non-profits. Creating open source software, based on open standards and protocols.

Where you own, and are free to repair, and are free to tweak or upgrade, your hardware. Which comes pre-installed with open source software from member-owned non-profits.

The Wikipedia/Wikimedia Foundation model works for encyclopaedias. So let's do that for search too.

And let's not leave the design of tech to just the computer science majors and MBAs. Let's get some social science and humanities folks in that design process too.

We can still do it.

But we need to start by recognising that tech, and who owns it, and who designs it, and who makes decisions about it, is a political issue.

We, the people, need to make those decisions. Not just the billionaire VCs and CEOs.

Big step for digital sovereignty in Germany!

We’re excited to see that BWI and ZenDiS have signed a 7-year agreement to bring open-source collaboration tools to the public sector.

As part of the openDesk suite, solutions like Collabora Online support secure, transparent, and fully sovereign document editing and collaboration – without relying on proprietary platforms.

Well, rar is not "free as in free speech" as it's proprietary software, but it's free of charge for personal use. Given how the author seems to care more about not paying for software than supporting free (as in freedom) software, rar should be good enough. Of course, if her main complaint is that WinRAR keeps prompting her to "upgrade from the free trial," then it's an issue with WinRAR, not rar itself.

Just published a small tool we use in our non-profit to export user data from #Keycloak into Excel or LibreCalc ODS format. It pulls standard and custom fields like IBAN, birthdate, phone, etc., using the Keycloak Admin API. You can run it through a SOCKS proxy if access is restricted. We need this to unite online (Keycloak) and offline accounts (#JVerein).

Config is done via a `.env` file, and the output is a clean Excel/ODS file you can use for reporting or integration. Repo here [1] — feel free to use or adapt it!

If you maintain an open source package, set up a standing search on scholar.google.com for your package name. You'll get gmail notifications of published papers referencing your package.

It's truly gratifying to see students and research teams making use of my pyparsing package to parse data sets and DSLs, so they can quickly get past the pesky parser development stage and get on with the business of their actual field of study. #pyparsing #python #google #oss #opensource
