Today is a little different. Today I am asking you for action, especially if you live in the US.

We have only six more days to comment about the looming removal of NEPA: National Environmental Policy Act. This act was a simple yet very effective framework for protecting our environment and has far and wide reaching positive effects. It is often called the "Magna Carta" of our environment laws. NEPA was one of the first laws ever written that establishes the broad national framework for protecting our environment. For example, sewage treatment to ensure clean water is a direct result from NEPA. It was signed into law by Nixon, and has enjoyed bipartisan support.

As an artist at the University of Michigan, we are deeply encouraged to critically think about the world around us. We are learning about protest art to understand how people come together to face injustice, and how those movements can inspire empathy in individuals, how movements can become so mainstream that they become part of company identities, and even be incorporated in policies.

So, I’m not usually vocal about politics, but I previously had a discussion with someone that was “pro-life”, meaning that they agree with the abortion ban, because they don’t believe in killing babies. That’s absolutely valid— no one wants to kill babies.

Apart from the conversation that we can have about “people having sex when they’re not supposed to”, or “people having sex and not wanting to be responsible when they get pregnant”, or rape cases, or unaccounted and unreported rape cases, apart from all of that, the abortion ban affects women because they will make it ILLEGAL to intervene when something goes wrong in a pregnancy too. This clip does a good job of providing examples of women that needed assistance with their pregnancies, which may not immediately be what we think of when we hear “abortion”, but will indeed be affected by the abortion ban, and may in fact be what kills babies. #art #protect #abortion #CriticalQuestions #roevwade
