"The standard ministerial line is that any historic act of struggle was noble and necessary – but modern equivalents are the preserve of malcontents and malefactors who deserve a good truncheon or tasering.’
James Butler on protest.

Only 4 days late BBC - Quakers condemn arrests of activists at meeting house

I'm tempted to write to our Merseyside PPC and ask if the Liverpool Quaker meeting house, and other gatherings to plan peaceful protests, will be safe from police invasions

The Met Police achieve a Streisland win - finally being reported by the MSM. They must be so proud. Pratts.

More than 20 Metropolitan Police officers broke down the front door of a Quaker meeting house to arrest six women who had met to discuss climate change and Gaza.

None have been charged - but the message iOS clear. Under Labour dissent is BAD.

The thing about #Quakers, &I should know because I am one, is that from the outside we look pretty soft and easy to intimidate. Most of us are delicate, silver haired elderly ladies or gender diverse young people wearing shapeless clothes made of hemp. We spend endless meetings reaching consensus on decolonising the names of roles in our Meetings. But once a Quaker is finally convinced of the moral course of action there is absolutely nothing that will sway them from it.

Slave labor was the economic foundation of the early United States, yet #Quakers took up the cause of abolition—although, Daquanna Harrison reminds us, Friends like Benjamin Lay and John Woolman were often not embraced because of their testimonies.

Daquanna invites us to consider whether we have stood beside Lay and Woolman at that time—and then brings the challenge to the present day: Who are our radical Friends now, and what can we do to show solidarity with them?

While I can't find a reference to it, I seem to remember that there is a clause in the title for this land that means it can never be built on, which may explain why it survives to this day when the last burial in it took place in 1857. Running parallel to Keith Street is Purdon Street, which another remider of the life of John Purdon as it's named after him.

The former Quaker Burial Ground on Keith Street in Partick. Glasgow's smallest graveyard, it was donated to the Quakers by the local land owner John Purdon in 1711, and his wife, Margaret Simspon (known better known as Quaker Meg), was said to have been the first person buried in it. There are no headstones in it, not because they have been lost over time, but because historically Quaker burials were not marked in this way.

What I love about Quakers:

I have a friend/erstwhile colleague who is quite active in the the local Quakers.

Once over lunch we were talking about morality & ethics in politics and said to me he thought I was essentially a Quaker.

My response was; the only difficulty I would have with that is that I don't believe in God.

To which he replied; that's not really a barrier to be a Quaker....

So, a 'religion' for people who morals are more important than any belief in God!

Right on!

The latest episode of Outlander has a very touching portrayal of a Friends (Quaker) wedding. It was faithful to the spirit of Friends even though only two Quakers were present and brought to mind the many joyful Quaker weddings I have been part of over the years. And Rollo's frustration...we've all been there Rollo.
