Dead forests like this are usually a sign of beavers having flooded an area. No charring to indicate a burn, but plenty of marsh to support the beaver theory. 
Having made the trip between Toronto and NS for so many years, we've seen the Trans Canada being improved. I think the only part that is not now a double highway is a segment of northern Quebec that is a twisty, marshy, 80 zone, with no passing lanes. Not sure if they'll ever expand that, but our trip is now about 2 hours shorter than it used to be. No more slowing to 50 when going through towns, now we bypass them. Too bad for many businesses that would get tourist $.
We've had to do the winter drive between Toronto and NS a few times (highly do not recommend, though this trip was pretty).
This is where the Trans Canada turns towards northern New Brunswick. Really pretty drive. The sun sets early in Dec, which meant some night driving ahead.
This is Corps-Mort (French for "dead body"), a small island off the coast of Ile de Havre Aubert in Îles de la Madeleine, Québec, Canada.
We rented a yellow, traditional salt box house for our stay. It was my dream house by the sea. Learned that the colourful fisherman's house traditionally matches the colour of their fishing boat. Makes sense, I guess. That way you'll always know which way is home. (Unless it's foggy and you can't see shit.)
