Hmmm.... so the Govt's answer to extreme workloads for probation officers, is not to invest in more staff but rather to cut provision of rehabilitation programmes & lower the grade of staff that deal with sex offenders (in England & Wales).

This looks like yet another case of the Govt. knowing the cost of everything but the value of nothing... the social costs of this sort of this sort of myopic politics are all too predictable!

James Timpson (Prisons Minister) has been quietly working to build up a network of firms to support his new regional employment councils that will focus on helping ex-offenders (prisoners) into jobs with sympathetic employers as a strategy to reduce re-offending.... a strategy reflecting his now experience or employing ex-prisoners at Timpson's.

It looks like he's tried to avoid ever-day politics & focussed on what he was appointed to do... not such a bad idea!

journals.plos.orgRed Brain, Blue Brain: Evaluative Processes Differ in Democrats and RepublicansLiberals and conservatives exhibit different cognitive styles and converging lines of evidence suggest that biology influences differences in their political attitudes and beliefs. In particular, a recent study of young adults suggests that liberals and conservatives have significantly different brain structure, with liberals showing increased gray matter volume in the anterior cingulate cortex, and conservatives showing increased gray matter volume in the in the amygdala. Here, we explore differences in brain function in liberals and conservatives by matching publicly-available voter records to 82 subjects who performed a risk-taking task during functional imaging. Although the risk-taking behavior of Democrats (liberals) and Republicans (conservatives) did not differ, their brain activity did. Democrats showed significantly greater activity in the left insula, while Republicans showed significantly greater activity in the right amygdala. In fact, a two parameter model of partisanship based on amygdala and insula activations yields a better fitting model of partisanship than a well-established model based on parental socialization of party identification long thought to be one of the core findings of political science. These results suggest that liberals and conservatives engage different cognitive processes when they think about risk, and they support recent evidence that conservatives show greater sensitivity to threatening stimuli.

On a question asking if #Harris supported the #decriminalization at the federal level of drug possession for personal use, Harris checked “yes.” She wrote it was “long past time that we changed our outdated & discriminatory criminalization of #marijuana” & said that she favored treating drug #addiction as a #PublicHealth issue, focusing on #rehabilitation instead of #incarceration.

Neither Harris nor the questionnaire said anything about #fentanyl.
