Nguyễn Văn Trỗi (1 February 1940 – 15 October 1964) was a #Vietnamese #revolutionary & member of the NLF (National Liberation Front). He gained notoriety after being captured by ARVN forces while trying to assassinate US Secretary of Defense Robert McNamara & Ambassador Henry Cabot Lodge Jr. who were visiting South Vietnam in May 1964.
Trỗi became the first publicly executed member of the NLF. His execution was filmed, and he remained defiant to the end. His last words before his execution in #Saigon :
"You are journalists and so you must be well informed about what is happening. It is the Americans who have committed aggression on our country, it is they who have been killing our people with planes and bombs ... I have never acted against the will of my people. It is against the Americans that I have taken action."
When a priest offered Trỗi absolution, he refused, saying: "I have committed no sin. It is the Americans who have sinned." As the first shots were fired, he called out: "Long live Vietnam!"
His wife wrote a biography book on his short but brave life. Phan Thi Quyen (c. 1965) Nguyen van troi tel qu'il etait (Nguyễn Văn Trỗi As He Was).
@fatherpat
People like #CorrieTenBoom and her family, #AnneFrank's father, and other #ResistanceFighters throughout #History, even from #God's word-- #Gideon, #Eliud, #David and others fought for what was right and good and *won* because they fought for what was right and good, and they did it with God on their side against impossible odds.
We can too. We can fight this. We can *win* this! With God, *anything* is possible!!! (3)

Two powerful World War II films now on Netflix
There are two outstanding movies about very divergent aspects of World War II currently available to watch on Netflix — Number 24 and The Six Triple Eight.
Source: rogertebert.com Source: impawards.comNumber 24 is a Norwegian film that is both dubbed and subtitled in English, which painfully depicts the moral and ethical dilemmas that arise from warfare. It follows the accounts of a highly decorated Norwegian resistance fighter (Gunnar Sønsteby) both during the war itself and many years later as he is describing his decisions and his unit’s actions to college students as a guest lecturer.
Source: spikytv.comThe film is extremely well done and will leave viewers examining their own inner quandaries of how they would have handled such situations in the fog of war. Without revealing too many details, the film is particularly poignant when his unit’s lethal actions against fellow Norwegians who collaborated with Germany are discussed with the students.
_______
The Six Triple Eight is a triumphant film featuring an all-star cast, about the only black Women’s Army Corp (WAC) unit, the 6888, to be deployed to Europe during World War II. The extent of racism and bigotry directed towards these soldiers by their fellow Americans, including by their superior officers is simply appalling.
Source: imdb.comKerry Washington is outstanding as the Major overseeing this unit as they train and then are deployed to resolve a seemingly unsolvable task with minimal help and limited time. Sadly, the film also reminds the viewer of how far the United States has yet to go to truly fulfill it’s heralded promises to all Americans.
Both movies are highly recommended and neither is particularly long (under two hours each).

Big Auntie honoured her former fellow resistance fighters with a long & somber incense filled ceremony at her home today. We have never attended any colonial public remembrance day ceremonies - except when me & my brothers were forced to, in our public school times, which was mandatory for all students. We have spent some time during past remembrance days with some Canadian veterans here, who have dedicated the rest of their lives to fighting for peace. Despite them being called traitors by folks who enjoy war/violence more than working very hard towards peace. They are the real heroes from past war times - they understand wars should NEVER be glorified but avoided.
