A song sparrow regularly visits our bird feeder and sits entranced, by itself, meditating on the birdseed as it contemplatively cracks the shells with its beak. We've named it Thinky, for its habit of seeking solitude and spacing out.

I wonder if I would recognize Thinky if it returned to my yard with a family in tow. Would its partner and offspring be as peaceful and prone to daydreaming? Or would it still stand out as a space cadet?

Thinky has dropped to the snowy ground to eat the seeds that fell from the bird feeder. I don't know why, Thinky just dropped those seeds.

A red-tailed hawk perched on a yellow metal irrigation gate surrounded by tall then tan grass/wheat and the back end of a black cow in the background. The hawk is turned slightly towards the camera, its white chest surrounded by the dark head and belly band. Heavy yellow talons grip the metal handle tightly. Its head is twisted back over its right shoulder, slightly arched up, bold yellow eye staring right back at the weird human.

A small female American kestrel is perched on the top of the ruined wall of a grey stone building. Tiny yellow feet are spread out over the stone, as the sunlight shines down on her brown striped white chest and rust-brown back. Her grey and brown head is facing forward to the right, shining black eye over the white cheek with distinctive black stripes down her face.

A small song sparrow perches on the top of some thin reeds, the sun backlighting the bird and small clumps of fluff still attached to the plant, causing a beautiful glow to surround everything. The heavily brown striped bird has some fluff in its beak and it moved around the thin twigs gathering more.

A backlit Wilson's Snipe moves through some shallow water, surrounded by bare reeds, as it searches through the mud with its long beak. The small bird is striped across its head and back, stretching from its large dark eye to its tail tip, with a white chest and underbelly over its yellow legs. The sunlight glistens in the background with the ice covered water.

Sparrow in a Tree

I need some help with this sparrow. So many of these little birds look much alike. I'm guessing that this is a swamp sparrow (Melospiza georgiana) which is what I'll call it unless I find out differently. Merlin identified it as a golden-crowned sparrow which is very unlikely because their range is the west coast. I took this photo, 20 September 2024, in Shreveport, Louisiana on the bank of the Red River. What do you think?

Hmmm ... Copilot thinks it might be a song sparrow (Melospiza melodia).
