A key part of my soil improvement plan at the community garden is to always have a bag handy to put the pieces of plastic, glass, and metal that turn up when I'm digging. Zip-ties and small shreds of plastic mulch are the most common, courtesy past gardeners who just couldn't be bothered to clean up after themselves. #trash #garden #gardening #allotment #GrowYourOwn #plastic #soil
Has everyone noticed?
Here in #Germany almost all #supermarkets use #epaper displays to show prices. They look great. It's hard to notice that it's not ink on dead trees.
That's thousands of displays per shop. Times thousands of shops in the entire country.
Some of those displays break or otherwise get replaced.
So there must be piles of used displays around the country... but where?
Does any of my fellow #hackers know how to get some of that #trash treasure?

For #RomanSiteSaturday let's go to a huge pile of #trash - Monte Testaccio in #Rome. A huge artificial hill located next to the Tiber River. It was made up of millions of broken amphorae (mostly oil amphorae from southern Spain) during the first three centuries AD.

I love your trash in which treasures are hidden, but even though our throwaway society lives in abundance, many feel consumed by inner emptiness. Some people become depressed because of it, others become aggressive and those who are unhappy buy something new and throw away something old. Not that I'm not happy about what I've found, but this is also a testament to the fact that we prefer to trust consumer goods rather than ourselves and those around us. What a waste.. After all, there is nothing more significant in our lifetimes than the times we spend together.
Big Tech is digital colonialism, siphoning creativity and exploiting consumers for profit while deepening inequality. These corporations treat individuals as mere resources in their relentless pursuit of profit.
When will you rise up against their exploitation? Just look at the damage they cause!
Got to fix another piece of neon to an "NYC Institution" today- Trash and Vaudville.
Although I have never actually been- I did find a photo of where the neon goes online- looks like near the back of the store.
This one was "natural" tube death from sputtered electrodes. They used super tiny electrodes, which run hot and flake off their metal from the electrons running into them. This also reduces the pressure in the tube leading to even more sputtering. Those old blackened shiny electrodes have been on and sputtered for awhile. Probably about a decade or two or even more.
I fixed it by replacing its electrodes, repumping it, and repainting. Took me one hour.
I replaced the electrodes for ones with the shells twice as big. Should be good for decades more. Fixing red neon tubes brings a strange satisfaction, especially when they are ruby red.
Speaking of trash, here's a nice tour of a waste-to-energy plant: https://virtualtour.gren.com/en/gren-klaip%C4%97da-waste-to-energy-plant

So basically trash bins are great for NYC. The only ones complaining are
- penny-pinching landlords using sidewalks as free dumps
- penny-pinching drivers using streets for free parking
