We swerve around horse excrement on the cycle-path. This is one of the reasons why they really should try to stick to their own paths (there are quite a lot of them).

Cycling past a garage selling fuel for cars. We're not buying.

A colourful apartment block in Groningen, next to a river and a cyclepath which we're going along.

My velomobile perfectly parked under a sign which says it's forbidden to park a bicycle here. The shop's closed and my bike is not in anyone's way, so I'm really not doing anyone any harm. These signs amuse me.

Three velomobiles parked next to a sign which says that the maximum speed allowed is 4 km/h. We will definitely be exceeding that speed (it actually only applies to boats).

Cycling through the countryside towards a village on a cycle-path next to a main road. Coming towards us, two pensioners side by side on their bikes, followed by someone with an electric mobility scooter. There's plenty of space on a 4 m wide cyclepath for us as well going in the opposite direction.

In Zuidhorn there are a pair of life-sized statues of men and women reaching to the sky, on top of not quite vertical poles which are several meters tall. I don't know what they represent. My velomobile is parked in front of one of them.

My bike computer and a mobile phone pretending to be a calculator sitting on my bike this afternoon. My age in miles works out as 94.99 km. However I didn't quite stop in time for the photo, so the computer is displaying 95.00. After this I cycled back home.

Church tower ahead. It looks quite different from most Dutch churches. Also the bakery underneath it in the photo.

But this view could make you wonder: there's a windmill ahead. But this is Germany and we're not using that very narrow and bumpy cycle-path.

Sign near a school to remind people of the 30 km speed limit. It's a brightly coloured pole with a red hand on top.

For some reason there's half a bicycle permanently connected to a light pole on this street.

A "bridge", but not over water. It's just to look nice, I think.

The "world's longest cycle bridge" is in Blauwestad. The worst thing about it is that it's almost a kilometre of horrible bumpy surface. The best thing about it is that when it comes to an end there's some nice smooth concrete to cycle on.
We like it so much that we used in in both directions...

Half way over. Some of the fillings in my teeth are still where they were earlier this morning.

Almost at the end. I can see concrete. Hooray !

On the return journey we're just about to go over the bridge again. It is quite long - you can see it stretching into the distance. I wish they'd done a better job of the bridge, though.

Heading east out of Rolde, four velomobiles on a cycle-path beside a main road.

A nice bridge over a canal. We're going straight on, though, towards another group in Muntendam.

We had to overtake this annoying slow tractor on a minor road.

At one of the "comfort stops". A "solar generator" which makes diesel engine sounds and which seems to emit diesel fumes. Greenwash much ?

No Sunday ride today. Instead, a group of us cycled to Leer in Germany yesterday to go to the opening event of Velowerk Nord West - a new shop selling recumbent bicycles and velomobiles.

Later in the afternoon it was time for a recreational ride. Got to get a bit of exercise occasionally. Luckily, by now the snowploughs had been everywhere and as the snow wasn't falling any more the surfaces stayed good.

Velomobile heading along a very clean looking cyclepath between trees in an urban environment. This is parallel with the ring road, which isn't visible behind the trees on the right. There's no chance of anyone slipping in conditions like this.

Another cyclepath parallel to a much more obvious road on the left. Two cyclists ahead of me

Approaching a large multi lane road junction on a cyclepath almost completely free of snow. Luckily we have cycle-paths in places like this so you don't have to work out in which of three lanes you had best position yourself to compete with the motorists. The speed limit on the road here is 50 km/h.

Cycle-path parallel with a canal and a motorway (behind the trees on the right). A very efficient route, and nicely free of snow thanks to the lovely snowplough drivers.

Going past one of many signs that we saw today which have EU flags on them. Lots of nice infrastructure is built or improved with EU funding. You used to see signs like this in the UK as well, when things were improved there, but not any more since Brexit, of course...

Bridge over the water in a recreational area. There's a separate parallel bridge for pedestrians (just visible on the right).

My last photo today, just 3 km from home. On this cyclepath I overtook two giggling girls on a fatbike who had now idea what a velomobile was and who were obviously surprised that they were not riding anything like the quickest thing going along here.

Three photos of the new cycle-path. This is rather nice. It's wide, smooth concrete. It's just a shame that at the end it ends a bit abruptly. In time this will link up at both ends properly and cyclists will have a new efficient route over the 30 km distance from Assen to Groningen. It's been taking a while, but more than half of it is complete now.

Velomobiles going along the new cyclepath. It's about 5 m wide, very smooth and really quite excellent. This is what we want ! At this point we pass another petrol station and again we don't buy any (I've not personally bought any type of fuel for a car since 2018).

The new cycle-path continues. As you can see, it's straight, smooth, efficient. The old path on the other side of the motorway worked OK, but it was not like this.

And this is where the new concrete cycle-path ends. We're ejected onto an old tiled path by a sort of a harbour. This leads to the bridge visible in the photo where we can pick up another part of the "new" route which has been in use for a few years already.

Continuing along the lane on the other side of the motorway. This has always been quite a good efficient route, but the new route when finished will be better.
The windmill was never on our route before. There was a path here which could be followed with a mountain bike (not really a cycle route). We used to take a route on the other side of the canal, continuing from the first photo in this set.

Existing route on the east side of the A28 motorway. The new cycle route will be on the west side. Photo shows velomobiles on a nice smooth asphalt lane.

Approaching the white windmill (witte molen) which is just South of Haren. We didn't come this way before because there was nowhere to go.

Stopped at the windmill. Four velomobiles parked, three cyclists facing the windmill.

Velomobile apparently disappearing onto a temporary bridge which leads onto the newly constructed cyclepath. Note that on this side of the bridge we're riding over lose tiles because this hasn't been completed yet. In this location there used to be a very simple wooden bridge over which you could push a two wheeled bicycle with care. In the future we'll get a proper bridge.

Today's recreational ride around Drenthe and Groningen. We started along the existing part of the "new" direct Assen-Groningen cycling route. It's been under construction for years now and there are still temporary parts, such as going a small industrial area. But today we were looking for a new piece which has been finished.

Velomobiles on a road through a small industrial area. It's completely free of traffic on Sunday. We didn't stop for petrol.

Velomobiles going along a country lane. This part of the route is a "fietsstraat" where cyclists have priority. It's a bit strange to have this in the countryside, but it's not much of a through route for motor vehicles - there's a parallel main road for cars (with decent cycle-path alongside) on the other side of the canal visible in the photo.

A sign telling us that work is continuing on the new route. But that means we can't use a small lane which we've always used in the past because they're improving it right now. No worry, we'll use a parallel route instead.

We didn't really need them because we know how to find our way around here, but redirection signs are put up to tell cyclists where the temporary route is that we need to take today.

Cycle-path alongside the main road through some villages to the south, we're cycling alongside quite a lot of traffic, but none of it conflicts with us.

Why we like cyclepaths: Judy is nowhere near this huge army lorry because of the cycle-path.

I stopped to drop off a parcel. Judy didn't. Now I have to catch up !

This cycle-path is part of the old Assen TT circuit. It's quite wide asphalt with banked corners, which we don't really need. Fun. Photo shows a velomobile ahead of mine riding through a banked corner.

Very narrow recreational cyclepath in the countryside

A railway crossing with no barriers or gates. Just look out yourself and don't cross if a train is coming. This is something which we only have locally on this mostly disused line which only a local steam train club uses occasionally

Are we in the Netherlands ? The photo shows a cyclepath alongside a canal, with velomobiles on the cyclepath and a traditional windmill on the other side of the canal. Looks very Dutch.
