Families like mine, two working parents with young kids living in suburbia, tend to need two cars. I don't like driving if I don't have to. Instead of a second car, my cargo bike is my SUV! I can haul my two primary school kids all around town, do a full week grocery shop for four—

and even carry a new, large, swimming pool home from the retail park through the lovely sunshine past the ducks at Callendar Park!

A very large box strapped to the back of a mid-tail cargo bike. The box is twice the length of the cargo rack of the bike and is resting at an angle in the railing for child passengers. It looks really awkward but, because the weight is lower than the centre of balance of the cyclist, it's not difficult to balance.

In January '24, I took part in a consultation about improving local walking and cycling routes. The local rag was against it and people were apoplectic on social media.
The results are finally out and for 9 out of the 10 proposed routes, more than 50% of respondents were supportive.
Just goes to show why people should respond to the actual consultation, rather than whinging online 😂
Anyway, last night the council passed the LCWIP. Now they just need to get the funding...

The word "fund" or "funding" appears five times under the Roads section which also mentions investment (twice) and distinct budgets.

"Funding" appears once in the Active Travel section and that's a reference to funding being removed from the National Transport Authority and brought under the control of central government.

"Consultation" is referenced three times in the Active Travel section and none at all in the Roads section.

A new school has been built where I live. It's got the first parallel crossing I've ever seen here. And the school has multiple bike racks.
If only there were safe bike lanes to actually get there...

ICYMI: I'm using the proposal to expand two local schools as an opportunity to argue for better streets for #ActiveTravel, including #SchoolStreets, wider footpaths, fewer obstructions, and #cycling infrastructure. A summary and my consultation response is over this way...
