This week we "Gather" for #AlternateFridayMusic

This 80s-90s Aussie band is fronted by the incomparable Lisa Gerrard. Even if you've never heard of her, you've probably heard her voice in a million places. Her full bodied contralto voice has an astounding range, able to hit controlled notes octaves above the expected. Semi operatic with a splash of eastern Europe and a healthy dose of melancholy. Brendan Perry's instrumentation for this band fuses themes and instruments from the middle ages to the baroque, which compliments her sound perfectly.

Let's gather for a rally...

🎶 Walk the corner to the rubble
That used to be a library, line up to the mind cemetery now
What we don't know keeps the contracts alive and movin'
They don't gotta burn the books, they just remove 'em
While arms warehouses fill as quick as the cells
Rally 'round the family, pockets full of shells 🎶

The prompt is Forever

Billy Nichols, “Forever’s No Time at All” from Pete Townshend’s “Who Came First” 1972

I recall reading that after dropping acid and getting the feeling that he wasn’t in his body, #PeteTownshend went searching for something more. He became a follower of the teachings of Indian guru Meher Baba, sprinkling references in #TheWho's output and, with fellow-devotee chums, recording a couple of albums in his honor.

For Who Came First, regarded as his first solo release (get the cover pic pun?🥚), he took some tracks from those albums, tweaked some of his Lifehouse demos, and recorded some additional tracks. It’s all Pete except for a #RonnieLane track with Pete on guitar, and the Billy Nichols track where Pete doesn’t appear at all.

I love this album despite its demo-y feel (or maybe "because of,” in a pre-Scoop world?) because it's Pete; ironically I’m featuring its one Pete-free track, but it's a good one.

#AlternateFridayMusic for Mar 14 2024 the word is "Forever"

Artist: Neil Diamond
Song: Forever In Blue Jeans
Album: You Don't Buy Me Flowers (1979)

I don't actually have this album, but it's definitely one of the Neil Diamond songs I remember from my childhood, although back then I thought it was "Reverend Blue Jeans", who I guess in my head may have been related to "Mr. Green Jeans" from Captain Kangaroo or something.

But it's cute and jaunty and anti-materialistic (or at least opposed to the idea of animate money, as we all should be).

A second pick for #AlternateFridayMusic
Again, from Breaking Benjamin.

14 March 2025 - 'Forever"

Forever by Breaking Benjamin

I've been a fan of Breaking Benjamin since the early days. They initially weren't very well known here in Australia, I had to import their first two albums from the US. I remember the original CD for their first album, Saturate, had a hidden track at the end known as 'Forever'. This beautiful and underrated track still holds up and was a precursor to later ballads like 'Rain'.

From the sweat of a Northern Beaches pub in 1981:

🎶 But you can draw the blind
But you can't stop the sun
From shining on & on & getting you there
Tide forever beckons you to leave
But something holds you back
It's not the promise of the swell or a girl
Just a hope that someday someway it'll be okay
So you stop & say
...
I'll stay & I'll fight
🎶

This #AlternateFridayMusic is taking "Forever".

These two death rock icons (Rozz Williams and Eva O) reunited and took their band in an entirely new direction by going completely acoustic. The result was a beautiful and haunting album of duets that highlighted their complimentary voices. The air of the album washes over the listener and calms the atmosphere:
