Dr. Jack Turban, child/adolescent psychiatrist and member of the NCAA Competitive Safeguards and Medical Aspects of Sports committee, has resigned in protest over the NCAA’s politically-motivated ban on transgender women participating in women’s sports.

Letter written on UCSF (University of California San Francisco) letterhead: (Part 1) February 6, 2025 Charles D. Baker President, National Collegiate Athletic Association 700 W. Washington Street Indianapolis, Indiana 46206 Dear Mr. Baker: I am writing to resign from the NCAA Committee on Competitive Safeguards and Medical Aspects of Sports (SMAS) effective immediately. Unfortunately, your recent decision to issue a blanket ban on trans female participation in women's sports does not align with medial or scientific consensus. I cannot in good conscience participate in this kind of politicization of science and medicine at the expense of some of our most vulnerable student athletes.
(Part 2) I am immensely grateful for my time with CSMAS and have been consistently impressed by the academic and medical rigor the committee brings to ensuring competitive fairness and the safety of student athletes. I am particularly thankful to have had the opportunity to work with the other physician members of the committee. Their compassion and scientific expertise have been unparalleled. However, it is clear that your decision was based on politics and not science, as the CSMAS membership was not consulted prior to the decision. Sincerely, Jack L. From the article: "Political campaigns in 2024 saw many Republicans — especially Donald Trump — and even some Democrats attack the inclusion of transgender females in girls’ and women’s sports, saying “men” shouldn’t be in these sports because of a supposed competitive advantage. On February 5, Trump signed an executive order called “No Men in Women’s Sports," with the White House claiming it is law. He warned that public schools and colleges that do not comply with the order would "risk their federal funding." But executive orders are not laws; they are directives issued by the president to federal agencies.

"Legal experts note that executive orders cannot override federal civil rights protections without congressional action and are expected to face swift legal challenges. This order is expected to face those challenges as well."
