Beeching’s Blockbuster. The Railway Revolution. 2,228 Stations to Go. Dr Beeching proposes to close half of the country’s railway stations and rip up 5,000 miles of track. London fares will go up 2s in the pound and some season tickets will be stopped. One of the stations to close is the Welsh station of Llanfairpwllgwyngyllgogerychwyrndrobwllllantysiliogogogoch.
As a soccer fan I hate how this upcoming world cup will be politicized. I hate how the swamp thing will take credit if we do well and I hate that the players are caught in a no-win situation. And if I'm being honest I really can't be bothered to offer my full-throated support anymore. This is like the 1936 Olympics. It's going to be the MAGA world cup.
My family WERE thinking of getting tickets for the Premier League Summer Series, where they play some games in the USA just for fun. But the good seat tickets were like $800 and the bad seat tickets are too high up! (My dad and my sister both very afraid of heights.)
So instead we're going to see a USA women's professional football (soccer) league game. Tix are between $12 and $53. Much more reasonable. :)
Hey, Americans. Random question. Do your high schools actually waste entire salaries on football coaches who don't like *teach* anything? I'm watching a US sitcom, and I just realized it's a plot point, and... that's not real, right? Because that would be bizarre.

Chris Kluwe, a former Minnesota Vikings NFL player, was arrested yesterday for protesting against Huntington Beach City Council's decision to allow the California city's library to display a plaque spelling out the word "MAGA." Kluwe spoke at a public meeting, describing MAGA ideology as "profoundly corrupt, unmistakably anti-democracy and most importantly...explicitly a Nazi movement." After taking a few steps toward the council dais he was arrested, carried from the room and taken to city jail where he was given a misdemeanor citation for disturbing an assembly. Here's NBC's story about the episode. Kluwe later told @LATimes: "I have the responsibility to step up and do something ... That's what I also hope to see from other people who enjoy that position of privilege and power ... that they take this example and say, 'You know what? I can do that too. I can help protect the oppressed.' Because it shouldn't be on the people who are being oppressed to fight by themselves."

The Victoria Road Drill Hall on the Southside of Glasgow. Completed in 1884, it was home to the 3rd Lanarkshire Rifle Volunteer Corps. It was designed by the architect John Bennie Wilson, who was a founding member of Third Lanark Atheltics, one of Scotland's oldest football teams.

Having learned a little about #CTE (Chronic Traumatic Encephalopathy) -- repeated concussions resulting in #dementia -- I am not a fan of #football anymore (that and the racism et al). I can't watch it anymore but I can read about it and this article about the misogyny at the Super Bowl is an important read.
