I've finally got around to reading M. John Harrison's 'Viriconium' stories. It's kind of Michael Moorcock meets Mervyn Peake round Jack Vance's house, and contains some of the best writing I've ever encountered.

The prompt is Void
Romeo Void, “Never Say Never” from Benefactor, 1982
I’m highlighting this one song - perhaps #RomeoVoid’s most well-known, so least likely to need highlighting - because everything about it is so emblematic of the #PostPunk/ #NewWave of the early #80s: The scratching guitar adding texture more than melody, the pounding drums propelling the song without commenting or elaborating on it, the driving bass, as closest thing to a lead instrument, the disaffected, double-tracked spoken vocals, and for good measure, dollops of #sax punctuating the spiky proceedings with some full, shiny musicality.
When this hit my ears - crisp, snarky, and female-empowering - it was so refreshing, in a more spare, lean way than the wire-scrubbing-brush-to-the-ear of all-out #punk, as a caustic tool for dislodging the pablum of dentist-office muzak and commercial radio sludge that shrouded so much of life at the time.
Happy Birthday to Cynthia Leigh Wilson, singer, songwriter and founding member of punk / new wave band the B-52's, born on this day in 1957, Athens, Georgia.

The prompt is West
Wall of Voodoo, “Call of the West” 1982
#WallOfVoodoo cultivated an air of mystery - their album covers, their very name! - and the subject matter of their songs, #StanRidgway's arch vocals, the music itself were always a little offbeat and angular in a way that made it easy for them to ride the #NewWave to us, via #EnnioMorricone #SpaghettiWestern.
This album was their commercial peak. I was going to feature a track you're less likely to have heard, but in the end had to go with "Mexican Radio." How could I resist the couplet “I wish I was in Tijuana/Eating barbecued iguana”?
Another favorite of mine is their oddly compelling cover of "Ring of Fire" from their debut eponymous ep. You may have also heard frontman and artistic lead Ridgway on "Don't Box Me In" from #StewartCopeland's soundtrack for the film adaptation of #SEHinton's Rumblefish, and he continues to release solo music via #bandcamp.

The OTHER Vapor’s record, and you know what?
I like it just as much as I like New Clear Days.
The opening track “Jimmie Jones” it’s awesome, and the album keeps up throughout.
And if you couldn’t tell, the front cover was done by illustrator Martin Handford, of “Where’s Waldo?” fame.
Tons of great songs, and VERY underrated.

Impossible challenges are good because they help to stimulate the mind. Therefore, I’d like to set you an impossible challenge: please nominate the greatest song ever written; no prevaricating, just one song.
I nominate If You Tolerate This - Manic Street Preachers
#NowPlaying: 'Limits of Language' by Field Music (2024).
Stunning album from perennial 'stunning-album-releasers'. Very synth orientated giving it an 80s New Wave feel. But they're as experimental as ever.
Driving to Brighton to see them tonight and I'm muchly excited.

The prompt is Xeno-
Peter Gabriel. “Not One of Us” 1980
Stepping away from my usual use of the prompt as literal text and going conceptual on this one, using the concept of xenophobia.
#PeterGabriel had the idea of issuing successive albums under just his name, like issues of a periodical. This made identifying his albums tough, so the album featuring this track is often referred to as “Peter Gabriel 3” (his third solo album) or “Melt” based on the cover graphic of his face seeming to melt.
The stripped-down #punk/ #postpunk aesthetic pointedly eschewed the excesses of #Prog(ressive) or #ArtRock bands, so I’ve puzzled over the likes of Peter Gabriel and #RobertFripp emerging from such bands (#Genesis and #KingCrimson respectively), and producing taut, lean music embracing/embraced by this #NewWave (pun intended). I don't know - could it be about talented people giving up drugs (or drug-soaked colleagues)?
Fall Line Drive – Fall Line Drive

Ideal world is full of surprises
Hi there ,
I'm Brad, I'm new to Chinwag, but not new to fedi (been here since late 2018).
I'm keen to chat about music, it was a huge part of my life way back when I studied it at uni. I'll give almost anything a good listen but genres I've spent the most time with might be: #Jazz (#HardBop, #PostBop, #FreeJazz), #ClassicalMusic (#ChamberMusic, #Orchestral, #Baroque), #Rock (#AlternativeRock, #PowerPop, #NewWave, #ProtoPunk, #ElectronicRock).
I'm very keen to learn whatever I can from folks who're into the earth and life sciences. #Geology, #Biology, #MolecularBiology, #PrebioticChemistry.
Cheers.

#NowPlaying: 'Too-Rye-Ay' by Dexys Midnight Runners (1982 - 'As it should have sounded' 2022 Remaster).
A great blend of soul, pop, New Wave and folk. Owned this at release but lost it in the intervening 40 years. I can now appreciate what a great album this is.
"The Safety Dance" is a song by Canadian #newWave/#synthpop band #MenWithoutHats, released in Canada in 1982 as the second single from #RhythmOfYouth. The song was written by lead singer #IvanDoroschuk after he had been ejected from a club for #pogoDancing. The song entered the Canadian top 50 in February 1983, peaking at No. 11 on May 14. In the meantime, "The Safety Dance" was released in the US on March 16, but did not enter the US charts until June 25.
